The Southern Cotton Asso*; ciation. ; t ' l What the Organization has { Accomplished in Two Years * ?Review of the Present 1 Cotton Situation. r t The following statement, signed j by President .Jordan, ol the c Soul hern Cot ton Association, and presidents of the several stale 8 divisions, was issued this week: 8 The value ot the Southern Cotton Association to the cotton c planters of the South is apparent ^ from the following statement: In the two years ending Sep tember 1, 1906, two crops ?>f c >tton, aggregating pnct'cally 2f>, 000,000 baits, will have been ^ marketed at an average price to (] bout i.t ni producers of nearly 10* cents per pound. (] In tlie two years ending Sep- i teraber 1, 1808, 22,500,000 bales 0 of cotton were produced and K marketed at an average price of j 61 cents. This increase in price iR an n aggregate of about $550,000,000, e and is very largely the work of C the Southern Cotton Association. 1 in comparison with such an d achievement thecosl of maintain- c ing its organization is but in fin- d itesitnal, and it enters upon-the p coming cotton season with tho a greatest confidence in the ulti- h mate realization of its purpose, a namely: fair pi ices for the pro tl duct of Southern labor; the avoi dance of over production of col- S ton ; and the protection 'of 'lie a South in its G"d-given privilege p of furnishing the world with the c cheapest clothing ever known at k prices which will repay the S Southern fanners for their ardu o ous toil and tho trained intelli- t< genco employed in producing it. b Tho Southern (Jotton Associa tl tion lias made its mistakes and *1 has had its enemies to fight.? c The mislalcs have not, however, 0 been imourt.int, as hIiowii l>v i lie 1 ' . , ' t' result, and its enemies have lor G Hie most part admit ted its power (4 and have been forced ultimately t' to align themselves with its pur !i poses. The l^t ol September, 1900, !.' will find the world absolutely , bare ol cot I on. The visible sup ply will be the smallest on record. The 25 000,000 hales of cotton with which the South has slip*|j;' plied civili/. ?ti<>n during the past I 'wo years are all consumed. The United Sta'es Depart nn*nt ol Ak- h riculture estimates that ii will S require -12,000,000 hales of cotton ' to adequately clef he the world's " population, and the progress ol j civilization is rapidly advancing y the world's population to a point at which it will require to ho adequately clothed. ? Whatever the size ol the coin- d ing cotton crop, there is no ream " on t\ hy ii iiould he sohi at. any i!' tliinu: )e.-s than the average' price obtained lor the last crop,'^ through the ellorti of the South- I "it OoMon Association, namely M' , . , ... . '.If. ii , i>t- ;iu'i i - ''f'Mis a pound. 1 Interested and soil constituted authorities have ot lute been en- j deavoring to Ptanipede Southern ? liolch ra and producers ol cotton into the belief that the coming crop watf 1 kely to he an nbnoi '] mally large one, produced Irom a Etn acreage very much iu oxcess >f any previously planted. This disposition seetus to have penerated even into the Crop Esti- J mating Board of the United Mates Government, who apparjntly have not as yet lully nnancipated ihenrtselves from 1 J lie maladroit influences which 'exulted in the scandal which! l?o efforts of the Southern Cot- j p on Association last year dis-. fr ilosed. e That tho cotton crop for tlie fi eason of 1906 7 is likely to be (J uperabundant, or ? von a large h ne, the Southern Cotton As&o- r< iation does not believe. lis re?orts from it s thousands of mem ers and correspon bills through- 'J nit the entire cotton bell indi8< ate that 'he increase over last ear is only 2.52 per cent., and fi( he scarcety ol labor, the late- ti iess of development, the excess d ve rains in many sections and h IroiiL'ht in the region west of ci lie Mississippi Valley foresliad- R< wr nntrflnnir l\nt n fn " nil * UI?I' " !? * > 1X7IVA l'/I ft cason commencing September st next. ? It is not the purpose of the t duthern Cotton Association to dvance cotton to an exorbitant ^ rice, nor one not justilied by onditions.
