Mr. Editor: It ban been some
time since I have undertaken to
scribble anything for your valua
ble sheet. So now, please allow
mo space to say a few things.
First, I will say that the health
of these surroundings is very fair,
only one case of sickness in the
country. Crops are looking very
promising, notwithstanding the

Really, it was so dry until it
was almost alarming. Well sir, I
looked and looked until my eyes
were strained for one of ''Uncle
Tom's" bugs, and for Charlie's
tarrapin, and finally found both ;
but neither of them was crossing
the road. fc>o I began to listen for
"Uncle John's" hootint: owl, the
best sign of all, so Haid Mr. Rat
tarree. And at. last Mr. Rat tar
ree reported that he had heard
the owl and admonished me to
hasten to the mountain. But two
or three days past and I reminded
him of the fact that the rain
had not come, notwithstanding
the owl had said so. He declared
that it was a young and inexperienced
owl, which had not attend
ed the last meeting of the weather
bureau and had failed to pro
cure a first grade certificate. Hut
the *ains did come in June and
we ?. ) aR anxious to see sunshi ne
as w vere to see rain. So while
the ground was not in condition
for plowing the people hauled
wood and old logs ofT the newground?and
the snakes, the

pasfied by the log pile soon after
the ioga had been handled with
their own hands and saw protruding
from a hole in one of the
logs the head and part of the
body of a huge pilot, and he was
soon out thr way. (that is Jim)
Then we have another young
man here of the latter day schools
and of colored uersuasion. who
had a wonderful experience with
a snake. Ue was plowing a hundred
yards from two other hoys
of like persuasion, and they were
two miles from home. It happened
that 1 was on the ground at
the time, not being otherwise engaged
that evening. .Joe left his
big black mule and came in a
frightened manner to where the
others worn and reported that
his mule was enveloped in a
whip snake so much ro that he
fled for help. They all went
cautiously to the place and found
that the snake had disappeared,
and ro had Joe. They reported
the fact to :ne and 1 started out
after Joe, and went as rapidly as
is prudent for a man of my age

curb. Ol course he had stopped
hollowing snake, but his eyes
looked 11kh two peuter bullets in
a black stump. I did n<d ask him
where his hat was, for he perhaps
did not know. If he did not
make that two miles in two
minutes he did it like Hill Hunter's
olavbank mare, as soon afterwards
as ho could.
W. T. Ligon, one of your York
subscribers, has the finest field
of corn I have seen. His cotton
1h also very nice. Hut lie says
"darned" if he is going to plant
another cotton crop juflt in time
for it to be killed by frost. He
thinks however he will get there
J on the home run.
! Brother Baker's colts must
have stopped going with their
mother to Sunday school.
If Mr. Mackey has any of those
egirs for sale he should advertise
them in The News.
A western horse ran away on a
farm adjoining us the other day
and whr so badly mangled up
that he had to be shot.
Sorry to learn that Kershaw
county has placed so great an
evil on the borders of Lancaster
county. They do not seem to heed
the scripture ; "Be not deceived,
God iR not mocked.,' Whatsoever
a man soweth that shall he also
reap."
1 was much pleased with
Brother Cletus Hardin's writeup
on the whiskey question. Why
in it that some professors of religion
will persist in advocating
the hell?born traffic?a traflic
good to send men's souls to hell
and bring sorrow and suffering
to poor helpless wives, children
and mothers, fill jails, pententiaries
and poor houses. Well, we
have had our fighting clothes on
for 20 years.
1 am superintending a promising
Sunday school at Smith's
Turnout, on the Southern
Railroad. It is a Presbyterian
church and its pastor is the Rev.
Mr. Hall, son-in-law of the late
Captain Bart. Witherspoon. I
went last Sunday to that old historic
church. Fishing Creek. I
noticed a slab in the cemetery
placed there in 1792, and was
informed by an old citizen that
there were older ones there than
that. That citizen also informed
me that one Rev. Sav preached
then during the Revolutionary
war, and lived near the church,
and that the Tories burned his
dwelling and scattered the feath
ers of his bed to the four winds.
1 noticed another thing there that
i will perhaps interest some in
Lancaster, and it w as a stone 0x7
ft. slab hanging against the wall
with this inscription: "To the
memory of the Rev. .John B.
Davis. Born in Lancaster Dis
trict in 1772. Installed pastor of
i this church 1709 " Ho served that
church as pastor for several
years and went to Davidson colI
