The County Conventions
What was Done by the Democratic
Organizations in
the Various Counties this
Week.

The proceedings of the Democratic
conventions which met
throughout the state yesterday
to name delegates to the state
convention on the ll?th are of
interest as showing the temper
of the people?at least such a
showing aR is colored by percolating
through the local politicians.
One of the most remarkable
features of the day was the action
of the Edgefield convention,
which adopted resolutions unanimously
endorsing Jim Tillman
for congress from that district.
This was incorporated in resolutions
endorsing the action and
work of Senator Tillman in the
state.
In every county where the proposition
was put Senator Tillman's
course in the senate was
endorsed, except at York, which
refused to do this by a narrow
majority.
It is a significant fact that not
a single county endorsed the
Brice act. Marlboro, the seat of
prohibition, voting down resolutions
to that eliect. On the
other hand a number of counties
endorsed the dispensary as the
bOst solution of the liquor question.
In York the fight on Senator
Briee failed, he being re-elected
county chairman over W. H.
Stewart, who was put up to beat
him, by a vote of 66 to 42.
Aiken did not mention the dispensary,
but adopted resolutions
for pure elections and secret ballots.
Anderson endorsed R Senator
Tillman's course in the senate.
The Barnwell county conven

the state convention "to define
and particularize the issues" to
be discussed by the candidates
for the legislature. It condetned
'Jimptrollpr (yeneral .Jones's,
scheme to raise assessments and
advocated raising the levy instead
if more money is needed.
Congressman Patterson was endorsed
for re election.
Cherokee did not instruct its
delegates, but they are all opposed
to the dispensary.
Chester had an entirely per
fnnctory convention, no resolution
being introduced.
Somebody wanted to endorse
M. C. (jalachat in t'larendon for
congress, but this was voted
dow n.
The Colleton convention was
without feature.
Darlington adopted resolutions
endorsing !. K. Norment for
secretary of state and J. Monroe
Spears tor ittornev genera!.
Fairfield went on record h1opposing
any futher restrictions
on voters in the primary, giving

Greenville endorsed M. F. Ansel
for govenor (which no doubt
made J. A. McOullough wince),
J. C. Boyd for adjutant general,
j Mayor G. 11. Mahoii for congress
and G. Lawrence Walker for
comptroller general.
The proceedings in Greenwood
i were altogether routine.
Hampton endorsed the course

Kershaw endorsed Speaker of

or, though it said nothing about
the dispensary situation. "
Lancaster, which recently went, g
dry, also had nothing to say on
the liquor question, although a
divided delegation was elected
to the state convention.
Laurens came out flat-footed
for the dispensary and endorsed p

railroad commissioner. It also -u
adopted a Socialistic resolution

Irbv advocating public ownership
of railroads, te'egraph and telephono
lines and cotton mills and
the establishment of a county

Lee endorsed the course of Sen- ?
ator Tillman and resoluted in -L
favor of Senator T. (i. McLeod
for lieutenant governor. Lee ki
went on record as opposed to
futher restricting the primary
voters.
