The United Stales Supreme
Court rendered a decision thi*
week sustaining the constitutionnlity
ot Georgia's law prohibiting
Sunday freight trains. The court
also dismissed, a day or two ago,
ihe appeal of the noted Kawl
ings, convicted ot murdering the
Carter children in Georgia.
The destruction of San Francisco
by earthquake and tire follows
closely upon the recent terrible
earthquakes on the island
of Formosa and the devastating
volcanic eruptions of Mount Ve
suvius. There are evidently unusual
and extraordinary disturbances
t4going on," as some one
expresses it, in the interior of
the earth, and where the next
outbreak will occur no man
knows.
The South Carolina delegation
in Congress is woming hard in
the interest of the rural mail service
in this State. Representatives
Lever and Aiken have both
made strong speeches on the subject
during til ? past lew days.
Mr. Lever arraigned the post
office department tor discriminating
against the South in the
establishment of i ural free deiiv
ery routes. Mr. Aiken is endeavoring
to get the pnv of carriers
increased to $840. a year.
Sonants Tillman ami Hopkins
had a lively tilt in the Senate
Thursday over the recent bank
failure in Chicago. Tillman
charged the Illinois Sena'or with
l aving used his official position
to shield the Chicago bank ofBcia'p.
Mr Hopkins retaliated by
accusing Senator Tillman and
ins 'State of suppressing 'lie ne
gro vote. He also charged Till
man with fnv 'ring the lynching
of negroes. The coloquy became
so hitter that the Senators had to
he called to order.
THE SANFRANCISCO EARTHQUAKE
All humanity stands today appalled
at the awful calamity that
has befallen San Francisco and
neighboring towns. But only
those who have experienced the
inexpressible terror of an earth
quake and have witnessed con
llagrations can have anv cone
lion of the horror mid ihe in
nitude of the present disaster
Usually the first rtpotts of 3
calamities are greatly exagg<

counts show that not even
has the worst been told. Ma
