When Senator Tillman had taken his p place he practically washed his hands of the spectacular part ot the performance. He was asked a few direct questions, to which his answers really should have put an end to the matter, tor the Senator's reply to fhe very first D question showed that he could ol not substantiate the charges he 0j *41 had been making, however, he ^ /went on in what the audience lominated a 'stump speech," a? give his opinions. In the course of his remarks Senator Tillman scolded the committee d for not getting down to the priv- Ii at9 an.nra ot men, who got rich by the dispensary, but he would not give any names of parties to whom lie was referring and thus aid the committee. The value of Senator Tilt man's information w was very little ; his advice may f( have been worth something; q and the moral effect of such a |( melodramatic performance will not be of much service to the committee in the future prosecu- ^ tion of its work.
