V V" I II llllviVv "? the Southern Cotton Association, which convene! at the nam" place on Jan. 15th, ooth, harmoniously ami without a dissent inn voice, pa^svd and recommended the following resolu tion: ' Believing that the 25 per cent reduction in cotton acreage, recommended and insisted upon by the Southern Cotton Association at its meeting at New Orleans, La., a year ago was eminently wise and salutary, this committee suggests with all the insistence at its command that for the year 1906 the Cot'on As sociation endeavor to continue that work, to ilie end that the original 25 per cent reduction from the acreage of 1904 may be accomplished in the year 1906." It is generally admitted that the reduction in cotton acreage for 1905 amounted to an average of 16 per cent. The demand for a full reduction of 25 per cent, from the enormous area planted in 1904 would mean that we must still further reduce the area planted in 190G from that of 1905 at least 10 per cent. The man who reduced 15 per cent, last year is expec'ed to cut his acreage another ten percent, this year. In o'her words, it is imperative that the cotton area planted on every farm in the South this year shall be at lea^t 25 per cent, less than that plant ed in the spring of 1906. Plant more land in foodsnppiy crops; less land in cotton; live at lionie, and sell your staple crops slowly, and at prices show ing a profit on the year's labor. Cotton is today t he cheapest, commodity on the market, figuring tlie true cost of its production. The true doctrine of dtversifi. cation and reduction in cotton acreage will be preached from every hill-top and valley, by the ' flitters and members ot the Southern Cotton Association, during the next 90 days. The entire southern Press will be urged to lift its voice, in behalf of these two fundamental propositions upon which the south must stake her tort unes in 1906. The wise man will heed this adVice, and exorcise every possible influence over any of his neigh hors who are not. disposed to exercise prudence before it is toe late. Make your larnis self-sustaining and tirow happy and prosperous. As the markets of the world are gradually broadened and the demand increases, then, and nol till then, let the acreage planted in cotton be increased. Regulate the supply to mpe' the present existing demand for cot s .mp lion, and thereby have a con trolling voice in the prices of the raw pre duct. No power on earth can control prices, when tin legitimate laws of supply and demand are recklessly elisregard ed. The farmers are like arbiters <>! their future fortunes.
