THE ESTABLISHMENT OF S< HOOL

Sta'o Su peri lite mien o( Education

every < Ifort in his power to en
courage and aid in 'lie establishment
of libraries in the public
schools throughout the state, lie
^evidently has a proper appreci
tit ion of the value ol good literature
in the hands of school children.
Some weeks ago, as noted in
these columns at the time, Mr.
Martin notified the county superintendents
of education that re
quisitions for libraries must be
made before the first of this
month, but it appeals from a
>iircular letter just sent out by

requisitions may now be sent in,
Mr. Martin having made ar

of libraries until an

In the letter referred to Mr

We wrote you some time a^o
that library requisitions (or 1905
must come in before January 1st.

k BENEFACTOR TO LANCASTER.
P
p Tlie News ami Courier by no
. means exaggerates what Colonel
?. Leroy Springs has done and is
doing for Lancaster, in its edi
torial reproduced elsewhere in
today's paper. No man has
'over done more for this community
and this county. As
o u r esteemed contemporary
truly says, Col. Springs's "activities
are narrowed to no single
object, and his sympathies are
with all good movements affecting
the interest of the people"
What would Lancaster be today
were it not for the en'erprises '
?nd in< ustiieg loundeo by him '(
Aside from givingemplovment to
thou?aud&, through Col. Springs '
iusti umentulity many hundreds
of thousands ot dollars have been
added to the value of the taxable
property of Lancaster comity.
Hi* numerous farms alone have
proven of inestimable value to
the country as object lessons in
i progressive farming.
1 It is true that Col. Springs lias
made money since he came to
Lancaster some twenty or more
years ago, but, whore he has made
one dollar here he has made ten
; elsewhere, and his good fortune
in evtry instance lias ledotinded

Henry Dunham Shot and
Killed by Clark Ivy, both
{""Irdnrf^rt ? ? SiVinnt incr in
the Vanwyck Section.
A homicide occurred in this
, county Sunday night, in the
Vanwyck section, on Mr. M. M.
Tillman's plantation, bo h the
parties being negroes. Honr\
Dunham was shot, and kil!e< 1 by
Clark Ivy, the killing occurring
at the lat or'a home.
The (acts as learned here are
that Dunham, having heard that
he had been accused by Ivy ot
stealing the lattor's chickens.
went to see him about it. He
called Ivy to the door and asked
him if he had made such charge,
and upon Ivy^s acknowledging
that he had, Dunham dared him
to com.? oct into tlie yard and
repeat it. 1 ?.n Ivy declined to
do, whereupon Dunha;1 fn ipped
his pistol at him. Ivy reached
above his head and got his gun
I and discharged one barrel at
Dunham, missing him. Dunham
snapped his pistol for the
second time, aud just as he <id
so Iyv fired the o'her barrel of
his gun, the load striking Dunham
in 1 lie stomach, death re
sulitng in a short time
Ivy was brought here Monday
and lodged in jail by Constable
Crenshaw.
The Goat's Tail Burned.
( From the Chesterfield Advertiser.
) :
.Jefferson had a fire last week .
that, had it not been for the i
vigorous efforts of the citizens,
wonhl have resulted in great loss I
to the town. It originated in
the ante room of the K. O. I\
llall, over the store of the In

$100 damage was done to the 1
hall, besides considerable damage
to the stock of goods of the ;
Ingram Blackwell Company, by (
water. The goat of the W. O.
W had his tail burned off, and
hereafter those being initiated
into that Order at Jefferson will
have to ride the goat without
