Page 2 Company Provides Income Protection When You Can’t Work Since August 1, 1985, accident and sickness benefits for hourly employees who are disabled by off-the-job injuries or sickness have been paid directly by Clinton Mills. The self-insured benefit payments are being made much faster by in-house processing of claims by th per sonnel department staff than they were previously by an Insurance company. Here are some important points about the disability protect' 00 •The basic benefit paid for you by Clinton Mills is $50 a week. •You may elect to purchase additional amounts, based on hourly earnings up to an additional $50 per week. •To be eligible for benefits you must be completely unable to work at any job for pay. You must be under the direct care of a doctor of medicine. •While the plan covers most disabilities, payments are not made for disabilities resulting from these and other similar cases: —Intentionally self-inflicted injuries —Job related injuries or illnesses. (The company pro vides Workers’ Compensation for job related injury or illness.) —Committing or attempting to commit a felony and —Attempted suicide. Outpatient Care Costs You Less If you or your dependent recently stayed in the hospital, you may have paid too much for your hospital care. Truman Owens, Clinton Mills Insurance Counselor, explains why. “Sometimes, on doctor's advice, people are admitted to a hospital instead of getting outpatient care. And a hospital stay may include days when there is no medical reason for the patient to be there," says Owens. “In both cases, you spend medically un necessary time in the hospital. These need less days are expensive for you as well as Clinton." Owens pointed out that “if you stay one unnecessary day, you pay the uncovered por tion of the bill, and that can be very expen sive." Owens said that non-essential hospitali zations are costs Clinton associates need to avoid. To help in this effort, the company began a pre-admission review program. In this program your doctor is required to call Proview anytime a decision is made to hos pitalize you or your dependent. If you do not use Proview, a $200 non-covered expense will be applied to your bill. The personnel at Proview are health care professionals — doctors and nurses — who review with your doctor the decision to admit you to the hospital. “Then," says Owens, “based on established medical standards, they help your doctor determine if treatment can be done on an outpatient basis." Owens noted that Proview is designed to maintain quality health care for Clinton associates while saving them the costs of hospital admissions when they aren't needed. “If you can avoid a stay, you can save money and time — time that you could spend at work or with family and friends, instead of in a hospital bed. As you can see," Owens said, “the program really is designed to help you.” He also said Clinton associates should re mind their doctor about Proview when a hos pital stay is advised. “This way, the program can best serve you," said Owens. See your personnel staff for more infor mation on our pre-admission review program. Remember — The purpose of the PRO VIEW program is to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions where alternate means of treatment are available. Proview will save Clinton Mills associates, their covered de pendents, as well as the company money by reviewing the medical necessity for in patient care. This program will in no way reduce your eligible benefits or delay appropriate medical treatment if you follow the Proview procedures.
