This Clothmaker edition offers a close examination of the extensive modernization currently in progress at Plant No. 1. Clinton Mills has committed in excess of $16,000,000 to make the multistory manufacturing facility a state-of-the-art textile complex. When completed, Plant No. 1 will contain some of the latest fiber handling yarn manufacturing and weaving and cloth room equipment available. In addition, a large portion of the equipment will be linked to a centralized computer center which will play a vital role in providing data on machine stops, yarn and weaving defects, machine efficiencies and other key factors in the manufacturing process. Ernestine Brown (left) is a Murata winder operator in Plant No. 1. Three winders automatically remove spun yarn from bobbins and wind it onto packages for filling yarn. Each winder has 60 spindles and is equipped with automatic bobbin feed and is self doffing. They are each equipped with Pneumafil travelling cleaners. In this extensive yarn preparation machinery improvements, the spoolers have been eliminated. Once a section beam is full, the warper operator places the beam on the Go-Forth section beam storage and conveyor system. The unique system transports warp beams be tween the first and third floors. It can store up to 22 beams. Plant No. 1 has also added a Go-Forth warp storage system (right photo) adjacent to the slasher. The system permits the orderly storage of 60 beams. Slasher opera tor Luke Smith is checking the proper operation of the slasher.
