Vance The city of Clinton honored banker and textile manufacturer Robert Mercer Vance on Monday, Nov. 24, for his contri butions to the community in business, educational, commercial, financial and civic activities. Clinton City Council presented Vance, 70, with a plaque and a framed copy of a resolution it adopted which proclaimed Friday, Dec. 5, as Robert M. Vance Day. Vance, chairman of the board at Clin ton Mills and chairman of the board at M. S. Bailey & Son, Bankers, was selected as grand marshal of Clinton’s Christmas parade on Saturday, Dec. 6. About 25 people —city officials, fami ly and friends — were on hand during the ceremony which was planned as a surprise for Vance. Vance is one of the few men to serve as both president of the South Carolina Tex tile Association and the South Carolina Banker’s Association. He is a member of the Clinton First Presbyterian Church and a member of the board of trustees at Presbyterian College. He is also a member of the National Cot ton Council and was named Textile Man of the Year by the N.Y. Board of Trade in 1978. . Vance, a native of Laurens County, is married to the former Virginia Sexton Gray. They have three children — Mary Bailey Vance Suitt, Robert Mercer Vance Jr. and Russell Gray Vance. Vance is a 1937 graduate of Davidson College and holds a bachelor of science degree in business administration.
