Clyde Martin Plant No. 2, Weaving, 3rd shift Start the year on the right foot — file your income tax return early. “Filing a Form 1040, 1040A, or even the 11-line Form 1040EZ can be an ordeal if prepared in haste at the last minute,” says Clinton Mills Tax Manager Lewis Boyer. “Through the years IRS has seen a trend in filing practices. Some employee tax payers file as soon as they receive their re turn tax packages and Forms W-2, 'Wage and Tax Statements.' Others prefer to wait until the last minute to file to beat the dead line on April 15,” noted Boyer. However, those who wait until the last minute might find that preparing their re turns earlier — even if only a week or few days earlier — could make a big difference. Preparing the return over a two- or three- week period will lessen the chances for mis takes as the taxpayer will be more relaxed and take more time in completing the form and appropriate supporting schedules. “Taking one’s time in preparing an income tax return will reduce the possibility of mak ing an error, and can help the taxpayer dis cover credits or deductions for which he or she qualifies and might have otherwise mis sed,” he added. Of course, many file close to the filing deadline because they must wait for certain necessary forms, such as Form W-2, “Wage and Tax statement,” or Form 1099-INT, “Statement for Recipients of Interest In come.” The Internal Revenue Servise advises tax payers, if they did not receive their state ments by Jan. 31, to contact the employer or payer and request that the form be issued. Clinton Mills issues its W-2 forms in early January. Employees who have had other jobs will need W-2 forms from their employers. Taxpayers who still have not received their Forms W-2 by Feb. 15 should call the IRS toll-free telephone number for their area. Those waiting for Forms 1099-INT should note that it is not necessary to attach this form to their completed returns. All that is required is the payment information from the forms; so if the taxpayer has kept accu rate records or can get the information from the issuing company, he or she can file with out having received the form. Boyer cautioned Clinton Mills employees who may itemize deductions to be careful in how they treat group insurance premiums for medical care. Don’t Be Accident Prone, Stay in Safety Zone. Annie L. Therefore, only those premiums paid with after-tax dol lars qualify for eligible deductions,” con tinued Boyer. To those expecting a tax refund this year, the Internal Revenue Service says a quick check for accuracy can help avoid mistakes which might slow tax return processing. Carefully prepared, easy-to-read returns can be processed faster, the IRS advises. Once the return is completed, the IRS suggests that taxpayers consult the following check list: — Have you attached all your Forms W-2 “Wage and Tax statements?” — Have you attached all the supporting schedules to your Form 1040? — Is your arithmetic correct? — If you rounded your number, did you round consistently? — Is your handwriting legible? — When you used the Tax Table, did you follow the line across to the correct column for your filing status? — D^d you sign and date your return? Re member, if it’s a joint return, your spouse must sign too. — Did you use the peel-off label, and is the information on the label correct? — Have you retained a copy of your return for your records? — Did you remember to put a stamp on the pre-addressed envelope? If the return has several attachments, additional postage 'may be required. Form 1040EZamd Form 1040 filers and certain taxpayers filing Form 1040 may re quest that the Internal Revenue figure their taxes for them. Those desiring this assistance must fill in certain items on the return, attach Forms W-2,-sign the return, and send it in before the April 15 deadline, according to the IRS. To qualify for this service, taxpayers must have an income of $50,000 or less, not itemize deductions and not use Schedule G, “Foreign Earned Income.” Income must in clude wages, salaries, tips, interest, di vidends, pensions and annuities, the IRS said. The agency will figure the tax in the way that benefits the taxpayer the most, the IRS stressed. Since eligible persons need only complete certain questions, IRS said they Steve Lanford will probably finish their returns faster and with less opportunity for error. If a refund is due, the IRS will figure the amount and send it to the taxpayer. If addi- tinal tax is owed, it will be computed and a bill sent for the balance. Neither interest nor the penalty for late payment will be charged Lanford to Head Cloth Room Steve Lanford has been named Bailey Plant cloth room superintendent, succeed ing Ray Lane, who has retired. A graduate of the University of South Carolina, he joined Clinton Mills May 21, 1973, as a management trainee. He has held numerous manufacturing positions throughout the Clinton organiza tion. Steve is a member of the Wattsville Lions Club. In 1986 if the bill for additional tax is paid within 30 days of the notice date, or by the due date of the return, whichever is later. For more information, taxpayers should check the instructions in their tax packaged. The most important thing to remember about filing a federal income tax return is to file by April 15. IT MATTERS, BY GEORGE... Back in 1789, George Washington already was talking about the importance of buying American textile and apparel products. In fact, he went so far as to call it “unfashion able” for American gentlemen to appear in anything that wasn’t made in the U.S.A. Well a lot has changed since President Washington’s time, but his advice still is sound as a dollar. It’s just as important to buy American today as it ever was, for at least three very important reasons: to keep our country strong, to provide more than 2 million jobs for our friends and neighbors, and to get excellent quality products at reasonable prices. So take a little good advice from our first president. Buy American because it matters. After all, would George Washington steer you wrong? Clinton Taxpayers Should File Early
