Pre-Tax Plan Lowers Expenses
Clinton Mills, Inc. has been very concerned about the rapid rise in
medical care costs. Our health care plan has been modified in an effort to
control these costs.
The company has been exploring ways to hold down medical care costs
and is actively talking with doctors and hospitals about the fees they
charge for services.
As a result of our continued efforts to help you reduce your medical
expenses, we are going to use some favorable tax provisions that will allow
us to establish the Pre-Tax Plan (PTP).
WHAT IS PTP?
PTP will simply allow you to shift premiums for health benefits from an
after-tax to a before-tax basis. This can be done by a salary reduction in
the amount of premiums before withholdings for Federal, State, and
Social Security taxes.
ELIGIBILITY;
All regular active employees of Clinton Mills who are eligible for the
health benefit plan can participate. New employees will become eligible
to join the PTP when they enroll in the health benefit plan.
REQUIREMENTS TO JOIN PTP:
You will automatically be enrolled in PTP if you are now paying health
premiums. This will allow you to take advantage of the before-tax method
of paying premiums.
If you do not wish to join, you must contact your personnel office.
CHANGES:
Changes may occur in your PTP for a couple of reasons:
If premium contribution rate changes.
If your family status changes. (Family status changes include marriage,
childbirth, death, divorce, doption, and a change in the status of your
spouse’s employment.) If you have changes like these, be sure to contact
your personnel office.
ONE UST WORD:
Clinton is able to allow pre-tax payment of medical premiums because
of certain changes the federal government has made in the tax laws. At
some point in the future, these laws may change again and the govern
ment may eliminate this tax advantage.
Chemicals Sought
Clinton Mills is in the process of surveying
all of the chemicals used throughout its
plants in the first step towards compliance
with the OSHA standard on hazard commun-
cations.
The OSHA standard requires that all che
mical hazards be identified. It also requires
training for all employees who come in con
tact with any chemical substance.
Clinton Mills, along with other industry
leaders, view the overall communications
standards as being one of the most expen
sive - and difficult regulations in the 12 year
history of OSHA.
Clinton Mills plans to have a detailed
material Safety Data Sheet for each chemic
al substance used in the plants by Novem
ber, 1985, and a completed training prog
ram prior to May, 1986.
Hazardous chemicals include those that
are toxic, corrosive, irritants and sensitizers.
