Theater performances provide relaxation
Gary Kuykendall
Gary Kuykendall, Plant No. 2 card
ing superintendent, has brought a
touch of Broadway to the community
as he performed in a number of
productions produced by the Laurens
County Community Theater.
He became interested in the theater
after becoming involved with his son.
Ran, in theater activities.
Kuykendall admits stage fright
takes a back seat to the feeling you get
from seeing the audience react posi
tively to a successful play.
"We're fortunate to have a group of
people in the county with common
goals," said Kuykendall. "Each play
requires lots of hard work and me
morizing the lines and lyrics isn’t
easy."
For Kuykendall, the theater has
provided a change of pace from rou
tine work. "It's totally different — and
in effect relaxing. I believe you can

perform your work better if you have
a good, relaxing hobby," he added.
Having starred in Oliver, The Wi
zard of Oz, Hello Dolly, A Christmas
Carol, and the soon-to-be-performed
Gypsy, Kuykendall sees his interest in
theater work increasing.
The Laurens County Community
Theater has brought opportunities to
many in our community. Not only has
it improved the cultural opportuni
ties, but is has enabled many to
participate in roles other than acting.
The behind the scenes staff has
enabled many local citizens to become
involved in a community project.
As for the future, Kuykendall plans
to continue performing with com
munity theater—especially as long as
his wife, Jenny, and his children
maintain an interest.
