Practice Good
One of the best ways of reducing medical
expenses is to develop better health habits.
If you are healthier, obviously your need for
medical services will be reduced as well as
the costs you pay for these services. Some
other practices you can follow that will help
reduce medical costs include:
1. Use hospital emergency rooms only for
emergency situations. Treatment for accidents
would certainly be considered an

in his office.
2. For non-emergency hospital confinements.
talk with your physician about preadmission
testing. This means that tests will
be run by the hospital prior to your admittance.
Normally this will be done the day
before you are admitted and it will automatically
save the cost of a hospital room for
one night and other standard charges.
3. Unless there is an emergency, avoid
confinements that begin on Friday or Saturday.
Considerable savings can be realized

Health Habits
trom this practice.
4. After a hospital stay, don't be reluctant
to question the charges shown on your bill if
they look incorrect. In other words, make
sure you are paying for the treatment you
actually received and nothing else!
5. When non-emergency surgery is necessary,and
you are not totally comfortable with
the procedures recommended to correct the
situation, don't be embarrassed to seek a
second option from another physician. Also,
you should inquire as to the cost of the
surgery.
6. If minor surgery is necessary, discuss
with your surgeon the possibilities of having
it done on an outpatient basis.
7. When your physican prescribes medication,
encourage him to prescribe generic
substitutes. Generic drugs have the same
ingredients and are just as good but cost
considerably less due to the advertising
associated with brand name drugs.
These will not only save money but can
help reduce your insurance plan's costs,
which in the long run will help hold down
increases in your insurance premiums.
