National Fire Protection Association.
Where there's fire, there's smoke.
Smoke is your worst enemy. It can choke
you and be fatal, after only a few breaths.
Remember, heat rises and takes most of the
smoke with it.
If you are caught in smoke, get down and
crawl. The freshest air will be at the floor.
The best advice is to hold your breath and

Escape from your home
1. Install a smoke detector outside your
sleeping area. It should have a label of a
safety testing organization.
2. Each family member should plan two
escape routes from his or her bedroom.
3. Seta meeting place outdoors so you will
know each family member has gotten out
safety.
4. Rehearse. Conduct periodic fire drills
at home. In time of a fire, seconds are valuable.

your alternate escape route. If cool, brace
your shoulder against the door and open it
ever so cautiously. Be ready to slam the door
if smoke or heat comes in. If the hall isclear,
your usual escape route may be safe.
Escape from buildings
1. As you enter, make it a practice to note
location of the nearest exits. If you are
staying in a hotel, count the doors between
your room and the exits. This will give you a
reference point.
2. Never use an elevator as your fire exit. It
can trap you. Many elevators are heat sensitive
and are forced to the fire floor. You
wouldn't want to be inside.
3. When you hear the a'arm, act. Don't
investigate, just get out.
