TOM DAVENPORT
Ficklin Is
Clinton Mills has numerous
employees and employee
family members who
have a full range of unusual
hobbies.
Gary Ficklin, 18, son of
Plant Number 2 employees
Mr. and Mrs. D.D. Ficklin,
" probably ?et a near record
in unicycle riding among
employee related hobbyist.
"I can ride from my home
on 106 Washington Street
to the scout hut behind the
National Guard Armory
and back without ever stopping,"
says Gary. "This is
about four miles roundtrip."
"It takes a lot of co-ordination
and even more practice
to get really good," he
added. "One of the hard
things about unicycle riding
is that you cannot coast on
u - you ve got to keep
peddling."
"My mother and daddy
had their doubts about my
learning to ride it, but I
had a determination to disprove
their beliefs. So,
with a strong will, and two
sawed off broom handles, I
mastered the unicycle in
about four months."
"I enjoy riding it, mainly
because it is a lot of exercise
and it amuses so many
people."
wnen l bought it,
everyone was going for ten
speed bicycles, so I decided
to buy something different."
he recalled.
Gary's favorite past time
with the one wheeler is
playing basketball on it.
This requires concentration,
skill, and co-ordination
especially to dribble the
ball without falling.
A 1976 graduate of Clinton
High School. Gary has
been a radio announcer at
Clinton's WPCC for twenty
months.
