"I've run almost every job
in the card room," noted
Assistant Superintendent
Johnny Payne as he recalled
his past fifteen years with
Clinton Mills.
"When I first came to
work, I was a service
operator in the Number 2
picker room, and some time
later, I transferred to
Number 1 where I worked as
a drawing and roving
operator, a technician, and
later Dromoted to Assistant
Superintendent."
Carding is a small department,
but yet one of much
importance to superior quality
production.
"The transition for me was
easy," recalled Payne. "1
try to stay out on the floor as
much as I can. This keeps
me close to the people and
the job.
"I enjoy my work, and
have some very fine employees
on my shift. This
always goes a long way in
running a good shift."
Payne, is a 1954 graduate
of Bell Street High School,
once worked for several
years as a shipping and
receiving clerk for a New
York belt manufacturer.
