Two Clinton Mills em
ployees, Mrs. William (Patsy)
Finley and Mrs. Eric
(Sylvia) Clayton are enrolled
in Tae Kwan Do
(Korean Karate) classes at
the Laurens YMCA.
"Karate is really a martial
art and not the contact sport
it is fast becoming through
commercialism," says Sylvia
Clayton, a secretary in
the Technical Services Department.
"We're fortunate to have
excellent instructors at both
the Clinton and Laurens
Y's," says Patsy Finley, also
a Clinton Mills secretary.
Many schools have sprung
up in the area, and often the
instructors aren't the most
qualified ones. This often
results in students learning
uiipi upci iiiuvciiiciud canu
techniques.
Both young ladi s enjoy
the physical challenge of the
sport.
"You really learn the inner
strength of self control,
respect for human life,
mental courage, and develop
a keen sense of sensitivity
and understanding," added
Sylvia.
Sylvia and Patsy are
taking their karate lessons
from Danny Pennington,
who holds a black belt in
Karate. Danny is Sylvia's
brother-in-law.

astic about their new form of
recreation. "I've wanted to
take Karate about three
years, but never had the
time," added Patsy.
"They make no exceptions
for male or female," she
continued. "We're in a class
with eighteen men."
Their recreational activities
extend far beyond the
Karate classes. Both are
avid football and basketball
fans, and are members of the
Holly Grove Baptist Church
Softball Team.
Patsy is also the mother of
two children.
Sylvia's husband, Eric, is
also a Clinton Mills technical
service employee. Eric takes
time from his busy schedule
to observe the twice a week
classes frequently.
