"For over 40 years I rode
back and forth from Cross
Anchor to Clinton Mills," recalled
Miss Gladys Wilson,
retired secretary, as she paid
her weekly visit to the Clinton
Mills Main Office recently.
"I traveled 26 miles each
day, 5V* to 6 days a week,"
she added. A quick computa
tion shows this to exceed
325,000 miles, or a distance

years old July 31, was the
only female employee in the
Clinton Office for several
years following her employment.
"One of the hardest
things we had to do was put
all of the payroll in individual

never became interested
enough to get a driving license,"
she added.
"I really admire those who
perform clerical duties today
because they have modern
computers to supply informa
tion and electric typewriters,
calculators, etc. to make the
work quicker and more accurate,
and a "lots less tiring,"
she said smiling.
She worked under all four
Clinton Mills presidents-M.S.,
W.J., and P.S. Bailey, as well
as Robert M. Vance. "In the
early days, the company didn't
believe in any breaks. The
only time we got to stop work
was during lunch," she vividly
recalled.
"During my employment
with the company, I saw many

"I come into town about
every Thursday for groceries,
medicine, and of course, a trip
by the place where I worked
so long," she added as her
eyes twinkled recalling her
happy days at Clinton.
In her retirement. Miss
Gladys enjoys raising flowers
as a hobby, and devotes much
of her time to teaching a
Sunday School class at Yarborough
Chapel United Methodist
Church a task whe's been
doing exceptionally well for
over 50 years.
Miss Gladys, who retired in
1963, is also a charter member
of the Clinton Mills "Old
Timer's Club," and has never
missed a banquet since the
club was formed in 1956.
