Martin J
Brevard Patterson, Bailey
Plant Master Mechanic, has
constructed a house for
Purple Martins in an effort
to bring them into this area,
lie erected his first house
in March, !!"??{, and, in only
a few days, had 11 pairs of
martins.
The Purple Martin eats
approximately 2,000 mosquitoes
per da\. Patterson
has found that the Martin
population s n c r case ct so
rapidly that he doesn't
need to spray for mosquitoes.
All that is required to
keep the martins is an adequate
food supply and
sufficient housing.
Martins depend on other

birds or man for their housing.
They adapt well to
artificial housing. They
prefer light material and
alter much experimentation,
Patterson constructed
light weight alumnium
houses for his birds.
Patterson's Martin houses
are on a 20' pole behind his
home. He noted that the
birds send out "scouts" to
find new homes.
He noted that the birds
could have an important
economic effect on agricultural
areas since they eat
such thines as mites, nara
sites, etc. The Purple Martin
can save farmers much
money on pesticides and
other chemicals.
