Save Family
Managing family records
can be complicated, and
many families don't even
try to work out a plan.
Since these records can
save money and costly legal
problems, here s a recommendation
on how long to
keep important papers:
Tax returns?Tax returns
should be kept at least five
years and preferably ten.
Your employer's withholding
statements should be

Cancelled Checks ? Cancelled
checks in payment

quickly could you put your
hands on the family's valuable
papers, insurance policies,
receipts, birth and
marriage certificates?
Are they safe from loss
through fire, theft, or misplacement?
They should be, and thev
should not only be placed
for safekeeping but be organized
for quick location
by members of the family
in an emergency.
A safe deposit box is a
reliable way to do this.
However, if none is available
or desirable, the minimum
protection should be
some sort of fire-proof con^
tainer for home use.
Another good way of as
