QUESTION: I am unemployed
at present but I expect
to go back to work in a
few months. Since I am only
62, if I take my benefits now.
will 1 ever get a raise in the
amount of mv social security
check?
ANSWER: You get 80', of
your full social security benefit
at age 62. If you later return
to work and your payments
are suspended, you
can get an increase in your
social security checks at age
65. Your monthly benefit
rate will be refigured at age
65 to give you credit for the
period in which you worked.
QUESTION: Is it wise for
me to start receiving my social
security at age 62 when I
can get only 80' < of what I
would get at 65?
ANSWER: It depends on
how long you will live after
you become 65. On the average.
if you begin to receive
social security benefits at 62,
during your lifetime you will

receive as much in total benefits
as if you waited until age
65 to collect higher monthly
payments.
QUESTION: What should
a retired person take with
him when he goes to the Social
Security Office to file a
claim?
ANSWER: Of course,
every applicant should bring
his account number card. If
he has an old written record
of his age, it might save time
to take it along. Don't postpone
filing until you can get
such papers but bring with
you if you have such record.
Just at this time one of the
most important pieces of information
needed is the W-2
form stating earnings in 1961.
Self employed persons should
bring an extra copy of their
income and self employment
tax return for 1961 and cancelled
check, money order
stub or any other receipt
which would show that the
return has been filed.
