Now Is The Time
the Coed
Now is the time to have
motor vehicles checked for
mechanical defects and to
L-orrect any faults that might
have resulted from months of
winter driving, the Highway
Department advises motorists.
The arrival of spring and
summer means that the average
automobile will be used
more for family pleasure
Irips. It also means that mechanical
troubles which developed
during cold weather
nay cause break-downs as
warmer weather comes on.
The Department listed 10
items to look for as trouble
nakers. and advised vehicle
jwners to consult their mechanics
to be certain their
vehicles are in good mechanical
condition.
Brakes should be checked
to be sure they hold evenly
m all four wheels. Headlight,
rear lights and directional
signals should be exlmincd
for good working
>rder. Tires should be property
inflated, and defective
ires should be replaced to

avoid blow-outs. Are the
treads worn off your tires?
Slick tires can prove deadly
on wet pavement.
Are your vehicle's front
wheels properly aligned? If
not, this can cause undue tire
wear and make the vehicle
hard to steer. Exhaust and
muffler systems should be
checked for dangerous carbon
monoxide leaks. Also, windshield
wipers, glass, horns
and rear view mirrors should
be inspected for good condition.
Many South Carolina

be conducting free Vehicle
Safety Check programs in the
near future, thereby offering ^
an opportunity to get vehicles
inspected without cost. Persons
who do not have access
to such a program should take
their vehicles to their favorite
mechanics. Correction of
defects now may help prevent
an accident or avoid
bigger trouble later, the
Highway Department advises.
