THE CLOTHMAKER
Cavaliers Cinderell
Clinton's youthful Cavaliers
were the surprise team
of the Western Carolina
Textile League this season.
Player ? Manager Truman
Owens' team made a downthe-wire
race for the league
championship with Dunean
of Greenville. The team considered
and expected by
many to be a cellar dweller
proved otherwise. What
the team lacked in experience
and maturity, it made up for
in speed and hustle. The oldest
player in the infield in
most of the names was only
20 years old. The infield,
other than catcher, were all
sons of Clinton-Lydia employees
who were stars on
this seasons Clinton High's
State Championship Baseball
Club. These young men.
Melvin Bailey. Barry Whitman,
Kinard Littleton, Phil
King are all products of
local Little League teams.
Spectator interest grew as
the Cavaliers stubbornly battled
for the championship.
Fans were pleased with the
spirit and hustle of the young
team testing its wings for
the first time in the league.
Major league scouts followed
the Cavaliers closer than
any other team in the league.
Led by short stop Kinard
Littleton the team possessed
more professional potential
than the other teams composed
of older semi-pro-players.
Sports writers and visitors
to the "Home of the Cavaliers"
were highly impressed
with the park considered by
many as one of the best
semi-pro baseball parks in
South Carolina.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Littlefield
and family visited Mr.
and Mrs. Marion Littlefield
this past Sundav.
Mr. and Mrs.' B. F. Johnson
