Davis, in Pick ens. -Will Jones, who has been living for some time in South p-Georgia, is visiting relatives and friends in Pickens. -Miss Lillian Sholar of Eas ley, was the charming guest of the Misses Boggs daughters of Clerk of Court A. W. Hester. There is no reason wvhy George s hould not make grood in this venture. --Mr. J. M. Porter, while dr'iving home from Pickens on Monday ran upon a big rattle snake in the r'oadl on the Eahrle place,. which he proceeded to Sdispatch with what means and weapons he could get at his command'. His snakeship was four feet long and was one of the largest Mr. Porter' ever saw. There has been about a dozen rattlers killed up in that territo ry in the last two weeks. Mr. J. R?. Baillowv recently killed one 'nthe Woldhorn p1nco Fth 1 -Mr. D. L. Norris of West minster, was a business visitor to Pickens last week. -Jas. P., Jr., and John C. Carey have both been confined to their rooms this week with an attack of lagrippe. -Miss Laird of Savannqh, and Mrs. W. B. Freeman and children of Pickens, left Tues day for a trip to Lake Toxawaye N. C. -Miss Fay Smith of Liberty, is again the operator at the Pickens Telephone Exchange and is giving universal satisfac tion. -Presiding Elder, W. M. Duncan preached an excellent sermon at Pickens Methodist church Sunday night and held quarterly conference for this charge on Monday. -Mrs. J. P. Hyde,of Pickens, who has been suffering from a nervous disorder and breahdown of health, we are glad to state is fast improving and gaining in health and strength. --Born, to Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Finley. of Pickens, a, bouncing boy. Elbert says he intends to make a lawyer out of him. "just like his daddy." - --Miss Elinor Knight has re turned fron her vacation, and will resume her music class in Pickens about the middle of Septenm1ber. -Ilhe cropsare beginining to look short. Mir. Earle': cotton is opening rapid ly. He sold the first bale at Seneca and the first at West rinster last year.-Farm and iA&-tory 15th instant. * In the Honea Path Chronicle of a recent date appered the fol lowving: The members of Bark er's Creek church presented, their pastor, Rev. D, W. HiottI with a handsome chest of silver' at the morning service yester-I (day. The gift was made in commemoration of the 35th an-. niversary of Mr. Hiott's pastor al wvork, thirteen years of which has been spent as pastor of Barker's Creek church. Rev.! Hiott knew nothing of the plans and was taken by surprise wvhen the gif t was tendered him. The' presentation was made by Rev. W. T. Tate of Belton, in his usual happy style. A large crowd1 witnessed the presenta tion w'ith much pleasure. -J. Luther B~agwell is sonme thing of a farmer, as well as a good commissioner, too. We learn that he has good crops and that his watermelon crop is something line, is extra large and1 luscious. Recently he (cut one which was dlividled among fourteen people, all of wvhom had plenty, andl then some left over. Sunday he was going t~o cut another large one, hut could not! get enough people around it to consume it, so the cutting was deferred. R. Ashmore, of this place is reported quite sick. -Rev. G. F. Kirby, pastor of the Pickens Methodist church,is quite indisposed. -The last and best excursion of the season is that to be run by Messrs. Mahon and March banks on Sept. 5th to Charleston and Savannah, either one of which Is worth the time and money required to make It. Onl. 2 cents. difference in the price to Sav anuah over Charles ton, the two best seaport cities in the South. This is the time for -the farmer to take his fami ly and enjoy a most pleasurable outing. Separate coaches will be reserved for the ladies and their escorts. They will also have separate coaches for the colored people. Everybody who knows or who has ridden with these gentlemen, know that their personal attention is given to these excursions; that they preserve and maintain order, and that they see everyone has a good time. See their agent at Liberty, Pickens or Easley for circulars, tickets or particulars. Died, at the home of his step daughter, Mrs. J. M. Phillips. i Seneca, S. C., on August 14th, Mr. E. T. Leavell. Mr. Leavell was born in Anderson district on the 17th of February, 1840, and was the last suivivor, save one sister, of a fai ily of 12 , ildren. He joilled the Mason ic lodge at 01(d Pedletoin in 1873, Ioved his mem bership from there to Belton and then again to Con - tral, at which lodge he was an honored member at his death. He served as W. M. of that lodge and was faithful and bright in the ancient and mystic order. He served throughout the war with the 2d rifles of Orr's regiment. He gave his 71 years of quiet unassuming life to his friends, his country and his church. His remains we laid to rest at Mt. Zion church, Central, S. C., on Tuesday after noon, after appropriate services at the church. His friends and relatives feel sincerely grateful for the marked kindness shown in his short illness and funieral management.--Farm and Fac tor'y.
