W. T. Bethea, of Dillon, received
a letter recently from a
lady in New York, saying that
ner (laughter was a passenger on
a train in which the Bethea
tragedy occurred and had been
frightened into a spell of sickness.
Enclosed was a doctor's
bill, which she said Mr. Bethea
ought to pay. He replied that
about forty years ago Sherman
passed through here, frighten-1
ing people almost to death, but
so far he had not heard of any
doctor's bills being paid by
Sherman's army.
Encourage New Enterprises.
The greatest need of Pickens
to-day is a big pay roll. There
can be 110 big pay roll without
the employment of a large number
of men, and this can not be
without the investment of large
Capital in useful ontornrisinc lilro
mills, factories, etc.
Capital should be attracted to
Pickens in every possible way,
and new enterprises encouraged
with whole heartedness and enthusiasm.
Louisville, Ky., is
sending out to the world a fold
er exploiting her advantages as
a location for all kinds of enterprises,
and offering all sorts of
inducements to attract capital
and encourage new enterprises.
One inducement is to exempt
from taxation for five years all
factories and sites that may be
established there. Another is
to donate sites, in whole or in
part, for factories. This is real
inducement, this is genuine encouragement.
This sort of inducement and
encouragement would attract
much capital and bring many
new enterprises to Pickens, employing
hundreds and thousands
of men and creating a pay
rol) that would pour thousands
? 6f dollars weeklv 011 the counters
of our merchants, and into other
commercial avenues of the town.
There are tentative propositions
right now to locate enterprises
in and about Pickens. A
furniture factory could be locat-1
ed here if properly incouraged.
Towns are made by encouraging:
enterprises; bite towns are
made in this way; big cities are
thus builded.
Let Pickens encourage new enterprises.
Greater Pickens must
be our motto.
Business and Relegion

mount," which contains all
necessary construction and ad-vice
that is needed in the Chris

that do other things cannot be

to temporal things, he said
"consider the lilies," the
"Beasts of the field," compare
them with the value of a human
soul, again, why are you
anxious, your father feeds and
clothes them, and he then giv?*s
the great foundation for the
christion to build upon. "First

his righteousness and all these

the temporal affairs of this

and you take all that's made?

Christian men we are living
on Gods land, we are his tenants
on a thousand farmes, but
are you paying your rent? Answer
the question "will a man

profits, to prove him, millions
are dying without any knowledge
of God, and are now looking

Men it has been nearly 2,000
years ago since Jesus said "(Jo
teach all nations," and yet there
are millions of people on this
earth today who are eagerly
asking this question "who is
Jesus?" God is today callinu
to men to answer this call by
combining their religion with
their business, if we fail to heed
and obey, we will meet it in the
judgement, then "what will
your answer be."

I have sent out this week a
copy of "Corn Growers Manual"
to the hoys in the corn growers
contest. All hoys who desire to
contest for a State prize should
write lion. K. J. Watson, Columbia.

enter the contest. Those who
desire to enter contest send
to Commissioner Watson for the
corn manual. The State Contest,
is separate from the County
Contest.
The Progressive Fanner, of
Raleigh, N. ('., has offered $1 ,;">()()
in prizes. The hoys in the county
contest should write to that
paper and get instructions so
that they may enter the contest
for the prizes offered by that paper.
