George Washington was horn on a
plantation of 1200 acres called Wake-I
field, in Westmoreland County. Va.,
ulxty-five miles below Washington
city, on the Potonme. Mary
Hall, Washington's mother,
was a mother worthy of her splendid
son. , She had Hpnnt some years of
her girlhood at thehomeof her brother,
Joseph Hall, at Cookham, in Rerk- i
shire, England, where Augustine
Washington, (Jeorge's father, happening
to be in Kngland upon affairs connected
with tils property, met her.
She was regarded as a belle and beauty,
and had many admirers in Virginia
as well an in England. Angusline
Washington was considered one
of the handsomest men of his day,
and was a widower, with two boys, at
the time of his marriage to Mary
Hall. Twelve years later Mary Wash

children. George, Hetty, Samuel, John
' and Charles, and two stepsons.
George evidently merited his moth-]
er's love, for he was in all things a
dutiful and upright, son. Even for
that time, when children were moat
