Ferguson, a V former citizen ofthe county, who e resided near Pickens. She, as.e Miss Effie Ferguson, was well e known to many in the county, t: having been a student of the si Piedmont Institute. About 20 t' years ago, she went to Kansas, u as the bride of Mr. Jas. L. Lewis h who has prospered in that coun- h try. They now reside in the bh Territory, where fortune has T -smiled on him. She will prob- a: ably spend some time in and d< around Pickens, visiting rela- f< tives. Mr. Lewis will probably ol come out to visit home-folks and t< go back with her. Her many friends are truly glad to see her. -Last Sunday the quiet of G the town was rudely broken by de the cry of fire and consternation o' reigned supreme. Soon every- hi body in town saw the direction $1 of the smoke and ran to see ci what could be done in the way tih of helping R. A. Bowen to save t his property, which was on fire. oi The family had finished dinner sc and were sitting on the front porch, oblivious of danger until iti a neighbor run in breathless and fc gave the alarm. The blaze had started from the stove in the kitchen, a spark falling on the roof and igniting the roof. The th bucket brigade formed and did cc what they could, while willing bc hands gathered the household ris goods and carried them out to a th place of safety.- Most all of the s articles in the parlor and two sti bed rooms were saved. From on the first it was seen that the 19 dwelling was doomed and the populace turned their attention Ai to saving the outbuildings and the neighboring dwellings.3 The day being a calm, still one, with no breeze stirring, prevent-3 ed what might otherwise have been a mighty conflagation in Pickens. There was no insurance on either the dwelling or the furniture and the loss falls heav ily on Mr. Bowen. His friends deeply sympathise with him - in his loss and have set to work and by their kindly offices andW offers of assistance and help, 1 he is now very well housed in - .the Parsons house on the corner S. of Johnson and Garvin street- EG He will rebuild at once. He will .ot be allowed to purchase any art of his exhibit from other arms; he can only show that 7hich he made himself or had iade on his place.
