LOCAL BREVITIES Some Things You Know and Some You Don't Know About Our Towns, County & People -Mr. and Mrs. J. I. Callahan, f Pickens, are visiting friends nd relatives at Piedmont this veek. -Miss Orra Robertson and Ars. Jessie Martin,of Greenville, tre visiting their sister, Mrs. i'. R. Allen,in Pickens. -B. B. Laboon. L. C. Thorn ey, Bruce Boggs and T. L. Biv ns are in the mountains this .veek trout fishing in the fishing preserves back of Bold Knob. -Jessie Lewis, Paul Robinson Julius Boggs, jr., and Mr. Lan der took a trip into the moun tains on foot. They had a fine Lime and returned home Mon lay. -Robert Laboon who for sev eral years has been in Texas and Oklahoma, and who came to his Old home to recover from a long and serious spell of sickness is now visiting his brother, B. B. Laboon, in Pickens. B. G. Nealy, of Pickens. R. 1, ras a very prolific tomato plant. He has pulled 10 ripe tomatoes 'rom the vine and has counted 134 green tomatoes and 100 looms on the plant. P. Alexander, of the west side of the county, was struck by light ning on the 13th instant, but slight damage was done. The gable was struck and some weather-hoarding knocked off as was also a few brick from the chimney. The bolt then drop ,ped to the sill which was set on &fire but the blaze was extinguish ed before any damage was done. -ChildremDay exercises will be held at Bethlehem Chnreh on next .,gia the 25th instant. of Bethlehem always a day of pleasure and real enjoyment on these occasions and next Sunday will be no ex ception to this rule. Peek and fanmily drove through the country, go ing and coming. and says that as fine crops as he ever saw are between Pickens and Westmin ister. Judge Peek and family are perfectly carried away with their outing and it is a treat to listen to him talk of his outing. C. -Miss Lois Bryant, a most winsome and charming little lady, of Camp Yonah, Ga., is on a visit to her uncle, J. A. Peek, in Pickens. -Bethlehem School will open next Monday, the 26th instant, with Miss Hattie Earle as teach er. The patrons and pupils are urged to be on hand on opening day. -We have a communication from "J. P. S.," from Rock, which we cannot publish as the author is unknown to us. We will publish no communication unless the author gives us his na.ne as a guarantee of good faith. -Bailey C. Robinson, while driving a mule to the buggy Sun day was considerably bruised up by the mule running away. The buggy run up on the, mule and frightened it, and Bailey jumped out, intending to catch the wheel and hold the buggy back. He was jerked to the ground and dragged some dis tance, severely bruising him, but is able to be up and about again. -Mrs. Roxie Annie Bell, wife of R. E. L. Bell, died at her home in Walhalla last Wednes day evening at about six o'clock, after a lingering illness of six years from consumption. She was taken seriously ill about thirteen days before her death. Mrs. Bell was a daughter of E. J. Nix, of Salem, her mother having died about ten years ago. Twentythree years ago she was married to R. E. L. Bell, who, with four children, two daugh ters and two sons, survives her. She was born in Pickens county on July 21st, 1870, being at the time of her death 39 years of age. Of her immediate family he] father and five brothers, Elisha, W. M., L. C., J. E., and J. I. Nix, and two sisters. Mrs. George Keith, of Pickens county, Mrs. M. B. Finley, of Salem, survive. She was a member of the Bap tist church, having joined the church twenty-nine years ago ir Augusta. Ga. There are nu merous relatives and friends throughout Oconee and Pickens counties who sympathize deepl> with the bereaved family in thei: hour of sorrow. Gj Ballenger, of Pickens, who have been quite ill with fever, a1 e reported as being much im prov -MIiss Gordon, who has b)een] teaching a select class in Pickens this summer, had to go to her home in Anderson Saturday on account of sickness. She was threatened with typhoid fever. Dr. Bolt accompanied her as far' as Greenville. Late reports from her state she is in the hos pital and doing splendid. Her friends hope she may soon be well and be with her Pickens friends again. -The Sentinel-Journal is al ways glad to hear from an old friend. Mr. J. B. Taylor sends a kindly message from Vicks burg, Miss., and says he longs to renew his acquaintance w-ith the surviving friends of his youth. His friends will be glad to know the world is us ing him kindly and generously and they wvill be gladder still to have him attend the reunion soon to be held at Carmel and be rebaptized with the precious memories of childhood.
