ON TO GREENVILLE.
The wide-awake and enterprising m*
chants of Greenville are manr sarenu.
ous efforts to control their full shar of
the trade of Pickens and all warrounding
country. To this end a number of lead.
Ina houses in that city, representing tha
dierent lines of trade, haVe purzhas, 4
a half-page in the Sentinel-Journal, in
which they propose to refund the ro%nd
tlp railroad fare to any penon liv a;
within a radius of forty infles of ,at
city and purchasing goods to theamount
of $25 from one or more of the hovaes
enumerated in their announcement and
all of which are known to be eiable
and first-class establishments. And in
order that the readers of our Iper uay
know the apecial inducement they can
offer. a number of the most enterpniwirag
firms have separate and coIW,00alk ad
vertisements in our paper. W&4 t*m
carefully, and mate a uemmcrandea of
the names of these houses, for (i course
you will want to call on zhem the Umrt
thing when you get to Oreenville.
This as certainly a generous prqpost-1
tion on the part of the enterpriAing, hig
hearted merchants cf Greenville, and
the good people of Pickens are sure tu
take advantage of it. Not only the citi.
zenr of our county, but of the town as
well; are now organizir,g parties to visit
Greenville as the welcome guets of those,
kind and generous merohauts. Thete itj
not a family so poor but will need at,
least $25 worth of goods, and something
like 2,000 of those Rebate Rooks should
be distnbuted over Pickens county aton.
Oae o!d farmer says he has laid naside
$100, and intend v% carry along his wj*
and t wo daughters, and they will.eam
get a rebate book.

LAWt week the Sentine.Jouralm "
lished the quartoly reports of the
o' Ficeens and the Bank of LJberty. ad
this week apparS Ihe rs-l of the Far
le.s' Bank of Central. There are siz
banks in Pickers co .rty, and they are.
all in a highly prosp, ero~us condtion,
Our people ushoul .3 read and study the
reports of their local banks, for they are
not only painters to the financial con di
tion of our immediate section, but, are
the most Important enterprises in our
midst, for around( them center and en
twine the uapbuilding of our county and
the Independence and uplifting of each
individual-for when the vaults of these
little county banks are filled it means
prosperity and plenty for us all, and
there are good times a'tead.
The reports of all three baiks a,s pub.
lished in our paper reflect cred it and
the highest p)raise alike upon the dirc
tory and ofmciale of the several lnsuitu
Jlens and the people of the towns And
tributary country whore they are located
and pstroniseid, We have made a care
ful study of these bank rerorts, and we
do assert, from the showing made by the
three banks m -ntioned above, that cash
entrusted to theIr keeping is as safe as if
invested in a Government bond.
Even the younger genetation can re
member when we depended for financial
aid on banks In neighboring cities. T.lhese
large banks ha a monopoly in financial
sanmstions, and were far removed from
the sphere of the avere farmer or cii
en. The result was the had to borrow
through second and thir hands-paylr g
mnrate to each party who stood betwee.,
thema an that bank-or hunt up some
neir who hadsa few dollars to loan.
But with the inauguration of little rural
bank, the middle men were al1 knocked
out, and the farmer enabled to borre-'
h at money he needed direct from ther,
tanks on his own name or such accep
table collateral as be could furnish. The
result is that many tillers of the soil
are able to pay' cash for suppl and
abandon the etortonate and Ious
time-salcs and credit system, t.
