Witherspoon is also responsible for watching the area behind the Grand Market Place and making sure drivers do not park in unauthorized locations. As a student, Witherspoon works in the Russell House Bookstore parking lot every day from 3 to 7 p.m. After the bookstore closes, she locks the gate to the lot and her duties end for the day. Witherspoon said parking attendants will be working out of a newly-built “office” in May next to the Callcott Social Science building. The one-room, white office building was completed during the spring semester. Witherspoon said that even though the time is drawing near for students to sell books back to the bookstore, the parking lot will not be allowing any extra free parking time. Students who wish to use the parking lot when lines in the bookstore are longer than a 30-minute wait will have to park at meters, she said. Witherspoon transferred from USC-Lancaster and has worked for the university for three years. She expects to graduate in May 2007 and wants to get a graduate degree, although she is unsure from where. Witherspoon participates in the Opportunity Scholars program and the Alumni Students Association. The Opportunity Scholars program is mostly for students who are the first in their family to go to college, and even though that was not Witherspoon’s particular situation, she was able to gain from the program. “I was able to start school sooner my freshman year and take nine course hours for free,” she said. While on the job, Witherspoon enjoys socializing with friends to make the hours pass more quickly and doing homework. The main rule for being on the job is “just watching the parking lot,” so listening to music, surfing the Internet and talking with friends while on the job are acceptable. For the summer, Witherspoon said she hopes to take classes and get a job working in the financial aid office, where she worked at her previous school. Witherspoon did not seem too enthusiastic about moving from the Horseshoe to East Quad for summer classes, but is “trying to get out” of school soon. Comments on this story?
