CAROLINA m BRIEF Engineering school appoints new dean Michael Amiridis, chairman of the department of chemical engineering., has been selected to be the engineering dean starting July 16. Amiridis has been a member of the faculty since 1994, and his research on nanostructured catalytic materials has received over $10 million in funding from the National Science Foundation and tht U.S. department of energy, among others. He has received numerous accolades acknowledging his excellence in teaching, ' including the Excellence in Teaching Award from Mortar Board, Michael J. Mungo Undergraduate Teaching Award, Michael J. Mungo Graduate Teaching Award and the Samuel Litman Distinguished Professor Award. Amiridis has won the Mortar Board honor three times. His research has also won acclaim, including the CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation. Amiridis takes the reigns from Duncan Buell, who has been the interim dean since 2005. Nation Duke lacrosse players arrested in rape case DURHAM, N.C. — Two Duke University lacrosse players were arrested on rape charges Tuesday in a scandal that has raised questions of race, class and the privileges college athletes.
