Charleston prepares
to launch city’s WiFi
CHARLESTON — Free,
public wireless Internet will
open in Charleston at the
end of the week, but only
20 to 30 percent of residents
will initially have access.
Mount Pleasant
telecommunications firm
Widespread Access LLC,
and the company that owns
The Post and Courier of
Charleston invested about
$500,000 to develop the
system.
Charleston will be one of
56 cities in the country with
citywide networks.
Gov. Mark Sanford has
said expanding broadband
Internet access in the state
is key to improving small
businesses and education.
Access to Charleston’s
wireless grid is hampered
by the challenge of sending
signals through thick trees
and the walls.

Minister’s wife faces
first-degree murder
SELMER, Tenn. — Members
of the congregation planted
flowers Saturday outside
the Fourth Street Church
of Christ as they waited for
their minister’s wife to be
brought home to face first
degree murder charges in
the death of her husband.
The gardening project
and a spring cleanup had
been planned weeks ago
by Matthew Winkler, the
31-year-old minister who
was shot to death at the
parsonage he shared with
his wife Mary and their
three young children.
Police found Mary
Winkler, 32, and her
daughters late Thursday in
Orange Beach, Ala.
Police said she confessed
to the killing, and she was
charged Friday with first
degree murder, a crime that
requires premeditation.

Court drops charges
of faith abandonment
KABUL, Afghanistan — A
court Sunday dismissed the
case against an Afghan man
facing possible execution
for converting from Islam
to Christianity, officials
said, paving the way for his
release.
The move eased pressure
from the West but raised
the dilemma of protecting
Abdul Rahman, who became
a Christian in the 1990s,
after his release.
One official said freedom
might come as soon as
Monday for Rahman.
Muslim extremists warned
the decision would start
protests.
The court’s decision was
sure to anger the clerics who
have demanded enforcement
the country’s Islamic
based laws calling for the
execution of Muslims who
abandon the faith.

its set up will show groups
around.
Because alumni and
students represent
many regions of South
Carolina, the groups will
be targeting their specific
representatives, Preston
said. “Legislators are more
likely to listen to concerns
from their home districts,”
he said.
The event has been
successful in the past,
Preston said, and he
expects this year’s efforts
to again gain support for
the university.
“We’re always good at
getting what we need,”
Preston said. “Lots of
legislators graduated from
Carolina, and they realize
(USC President Andrew)
Sorensen’s administration
is working hard to make
USC one of the most
competitive schools in the
country. They also love
to see a sea of garnet and
black in the State House.”
After a morning o|^
lobbying, the day wil^^
end with a luncheon with
Sorensen.
Last year, more than 200
people lobbied at the State
House. This year, more
than 300 have registered
so far. Preston said the
group wants “as many as
we can get.” Although
not required, registration
is preferred and available
