transfer following the 2005
season. Heffner, a standout
rushing quarterback from
Memphis, found himself
behind an established
starter in sophomore Blake
Mitchell, while Ashcraft
transferred to Appalachian
State to harness his speed in
the track-and-field setting.
Also, sophomore All
American rover Ko Simpson
and junior cornerback
Johnathan Joseph, who had
a breakout 2005 season,
forewent their remaining
eligibility for the NFL
Draft.
Now it seems redshirt
freshman Stoney Woodson
will replace Joseph at corner,
while junior cornerback
Fred Bennett will retain his
starting spot.
Heading into the 2005
season, USC was unaware
who would emerge as its
feature back. Freshman
Mike Davis became the
undoubted starter and
performer by season’s
end, with an 18-carry,
132-yard Independence
Bowl performance.
However, junior Syvelle
Newton’s three-touchdown
performance against
Vanderbilt in his first
backfield start makes the
backfield a debatable
position.
All of these conflicts will
initially be addressed by
the Garnet & Black spring
game April 8.
The game drew more
than 30,000 fans last season
and should draw similar
interest when it kicks off at
2 p.m. that Saturday.

season by winning their
first three matches 7-0.
The women’s overall record
for the dual-match season
stands at 5-1, with their
only loss coming against
Maryland. USC last faced
in-state rival Clemson
at home on Sunday and
scraped out a 4-3 win. The
team is currently ranked No.
26 in the FILA Collegiate
Tennis Rankings and will
be looking to improve this
weekend when the girls
travel to face Brown on
Saturday and Harvard on
Sunday.
As the conference season
gets underway, head coach
Arlo Elkins, who has been
at USC for 22 years, will
have a roster of high
ranked players to propel
the team forward. Three
USC women were ranked
in the final ITA Southeast
Fall Regional Rankings.
USC junior Laura Ganzer
ranked No. 25, with USC’s
two freshmen also receiving
rankings. Gira Schofield
and Natasa Vuckovic
finished No. 11 and No. 27,
respectively.
Vuckovic was also named
SEC co-player of the week
in early February,- after she
went 4-0 in her first matches
of the season. Elkins hopes
to harness the strengths of
his young talents to compete
for the SEC Championship
and advance to the NCAA
tournament. The team
will also be attempting
to continue its streak of
winning at least five SEC
matches, a feat that they
have accomplished every
year since joining the SEC
in 1992.
