decision,” he said.
McKinney said that if the
General Assembly did pass
a tuition cap, the university
would try to ensure that
the cap was not “punitive”
to USC or the other state
colleges.
While at first the cap
seems like a logical solution,
the repercussions would be
far-reaching, and students
would likely still pay more
for their education, SG Vice
President Ryan Holt said.
According to Holt, a
tuition cap would force the
university to raise student
fees to make up for lost
funding. He said that instead
of capping tuition, the
state should fund its public
universities.
Gov. Sanford said that
South Carolina has the
highest in-state tuition rates
in the Southeast and is rated
among the top five in the
entire nation. He named
North Carolina and Georgia
as two states who have lower
in-state tuitions, but Preston
said those state’s schools can
afford to have low tuition
costs because they are well
. funded by their states,
r Hughes said that less than
30 percent of USC’s budget
comes from the state. In his
State of the State speech,
Sanford said that public
universities should begin
branching out and seeking
more private funding.
McKinney said that the cap
is something the university
“will be following closely”
in its progress through the
legislative system.

said efficiently designed
chemical process unit
operations equipment is
the key to achieving these
objectives.
Ely is addressing this in a
six-student research group
that employs applied theory
and computer simulation
to develop improved
engineering models.
The group also researches
the equilibrium and non
equilibrium properties
of molecular fluids and
asymmetric fluid mixtures
and other objectives.
Before becoming a
professor at CSM, Ely
worked at NIST as the
associate director of the
chemical science and
technology laboratory and
group leader of the theory
of fluids group at various
points in his career.
CSM professor Tom
McKinnon said Ely is an
excellent candidate for
the deanship for various
reasons.
“He’s got very impressive
management . skills,”
McKinnon said. “He’s
good at building concern
for his objectives. He’s able
to articulate very well the
department’s needs.”
McKinnon also said Ely
is a “very personable man”
and said CSM will be “very
sad to see him go,” if he
receives the position.
Ely has received
many honors during his
professional career. In
2004, he was one of two
professors to receive an
Erskine fellowship in the
field of chemical and process
engineering from the
University of Canterbury.
Erskine fellows travel to
the New Zealand university
and lecture to students for
one to three months.
He was also awarded a
silver medal for meritorious
federal service from
the U.S. Department
of Commerce in 1986.
His work in developing
predictive models for the
thermophysical properties
of fluids earned him this
citation.
Ely is currently head of 36
faculty and staff members
at CSM. If he receives the
deanship, he will supervise
100 faculty members
and 1300 undergraduate
students.
The other candidates
include Michael D. Amiridis,
professor and chairman of
USC’s chemical engineering
department, and Christine
W. Curtis, a chemical
engineering professor at
Auburn University.
USC will be interviewing
Curtis Feb. 1-2. Amiridis
will be interviewed Feb. 6
7.

‘The most important
thing someone can get from
this is help and direction,”
Curry said. “Getting people
resources and connecting
them to recovery groups is
the most important part of
this event.”
To achieve that goal,
students attending
PornSunday received an
anonymous questionnaire
inviting them to sign
up for a mailing list and
provide feedback on their
experience at PornSunday.
The presentation presented
facts and revealed an issue
most students knew little
about.
“[The experience]
brought to the light
something that was hidden
in the darkness in everyday
life,” Knott said.
For further research,
Curry pointed students
to xxxchurch.com, which
provides access to groups,
facts and resources for
battling porn addiction.
One of those resources he
highlighted was x3watch.
com, a free program
developed by xxxchurch.
com to place accountability
and transparency on a
personal battle with pom.
The program monitors
Web sites visited on a user’s
computer and every month
emails a list of questionable
sites to someone of the
user’s choice.
X3watch.com and other
resources are available to
interested students at the
Web site, and other local
organizations are available
to talk with interested
students, as well.
First Presbyterian
Counseling Center was on
hand at the event as were
other individuals offering
help with porn addiction.
Students can seek local
help through the ministry
or counselors, as well as a
mailing list of information
available from Curry.

“It’s sad that people have
to resort to such crazy
schemes to make money,”
said Rebecca Whitehouse,
a first-year retailing
student.
“Why would they try
this on a college campus?
We’re all poor,” she said.
