is what K.T. and I took.”
Mitchell testified that after
’ questioning on Feb. 28,
Thompson retracted earlier
statements that he had no
knowledge of the missing items
and offered to return certain
items.
Thompson returned the
TV/DVD combo taken from the
apartment of McArdle and
LaRocque, while Mainord
returned the Apple sign, the Apex
TV, and three new DVDs.
Mainord also wrote an
apology letter to each set of
apartment residents, saying in his
, letter to McArdle and LaRocque
9 he did not remove items from
their room but would help pay
for them.
“1 was writing to tell you that I
didn’t take things out of your
room, but I was with Moe when
he did,” he said.
Testimony resumes today,
with the prosecution calling its
final witnesses and the defense
beginning to present its case.

country faced a 30-percent
unemployment rate for a
population three-fourths of
which was under 35.
“In Algeria, we had a
profession of leaning against a
wall. Many of our young
people had no work, and
when they saw the wealthy
drive by on vacation, they
knew it — they were nobody,”
he said.
“Then a terrorist comes up
to them one day, and hands
them a gun as a gift. Then that
young man is the king of the
neighborhood.”
After the first
parliamentary election in
1991, the Algerian army,
fearful of the FIS taking
power and, according to
Fellah, “creating the first
Islamic Algerian state,”
cancelled the second round of
elections in January 1992.
The government outlawed
the FIS, arresting thousands of
party members and
sympathizers. Armed Islamic
groups arose in the mountains
and villages, throwing the
country into chaos for 10
years.
Fellah spoke passionately
about how a major militia, the
Islamic Armed Group (GIA)
began to systematically
intimidate and target civilians
and pro-democratic
intellectuals.
“In Islam, you are
traditionally buried in a white
cloth. These journalists (and
other democracy advocates),
they would receive a white
handkerchief in the mail. If
you received this little
handkerchief, it only meant
one thing — you were next on
the list.”
Fellah recounted details of
how guerillas eliminated all
resistance to an Islamic state
similar to Iran. A friend of the
family, a pro-democratic
journalist, was visited by
Islamic guerrillas, who
knocked down his door and
executed him by slitting his
throat with a wooden stick.
Though peace was declared
in 2002, Fellah said he feels
there is no redress for him or
the families of the
approximately 100,000
casualties.
Negotiations between the
Algerian government and rebel
- groups produced a decree of
amnesty for insurgents,
without the need for them to
confess to crimes committed
during 15 years of bloody
conflict. A charter voted on at
the end of September this year
pardons all aggressors in the
civil war, whether they
murdered one policeman or
massacred a village.
“Justice should be rendered.
Impunity is just not
acceptable,” Fellah said.
He said the settling peace in
Algeria reveals how radical
Islam has pervaded the Social
system of its citizens. Fellah
referenced a recent decisionjo
make religious education
mandatory in Algerian
elementary and secondary
schools.
Insofar as international
assistance to the North
African country was
concerned, Fellah had nothing
but stinging criticism for the
United Nations, where he
worked for a decade before
quitting over complains of
corruption.
“When (U.S. Ambassador)
John Bolton said ‘if you .took
out 10 floors of the U.N.
building, no one would
notice,’ I think he was being
very generous. If you gave that
building to Donald Trump, he
would know what to do with
it!” Fellah quipped.
«
“The U.N. established a
counter-terrorism committee,
but it’s just another
bureaucracy ... . They travel to
beautiful places like Morocco
or Kenya, and draw up
reports,” he sighed. “The
counter-terrorism committee
might as well be a pro-tourism
committee.”
Fellah said only a return to
an open, democratic education
could possibly return Algeria
to stability and rescue it from
becoming a potentially violent
Islamic state.
“What we need is to engage
in a true intellectual
revolution, and to do that you
need to educate people ... . If
we do not embrace democratic
values, separate state from
rposque, we will never grasp
the challenges of the 21st
century.”
