Coleman estimates that a
sturdy, long-term bike would
cost $250. Lifetime
maintenance for each bike
would betabout $50.
RHA senators voiced
concerns and questions to
Coleman about the new
program, particularly
concerning the cost of each
bicycle, the lack of bicycle
paths and the possibility of the
bikes being stolen.
“I expected all of those
questions • to be asked,”
Coleman said. “Most of the
questions have easy answers,
and if I didn’t answer them
tonight, then I will in the
future.”
Coleman developed the idea
for a bike fleet at USC, but
looks to Furman University’s
“Green Bike” and the
University of Colorado
Boulder’s bike rental programs
for guidance.
“Like the green bikes at
Furman,” Coleman said, “we
are looking for a cost-effective,
but smart solution.”
Coleman is also looking to
the City of Columbia for
support.
“Many students don’t realize
it, but the City of Columbia is
committed to making
Columbia a bike-friendly
town,” Coleman said. “USC
could be a hub, but it’s not yet.
I’d like to see the university
work with the city in
permitting USC as a hub, part
of a greater scheme that
Columbia is already working
on.”
At the meeting, Coleman
encouraged senators to take
action.
“Campus planning is
reconstructing right now,”
Coleman said. “If the students
let them know right now that
we need bike lanes, we may be
able to get them.”
Some RHA advisors fear the

fleet of bikes and pathways
might not come at the same
time.
“The bikes may not be here
until fall 2006, but the timing
is now, the grants are now and
the project proposal is now,”
Coleman said. “Once the
word has gotten out, it will be
much easier to get the ball
rolling.”
Coleman said on-campus
demand for bicycle use will
continue to steadily increase
and meeting the demands for
safer and more accessible
bicycling services is critical for
success in the expansion in
bicycling services.
“By looking at what we have
here on campus, the bike racks
are full and the cyclists have
nowhere to go,” Colerr^an said.
“It easy to see that the new
program will reduce time,
improve students’ health and
save overall emissions from the
students driving around
campus.”
A pilot program or trial
version of the program was
recommended at the meeting.
Student senator Jonathan
Ross, a third-year political
science student, offered his
support to Colemans proposal.
“Sen. Coleman has put in
extensive time and research
with this,” Ross said. “She’s
moving forward in her
planning and I think we
should move forward with
her.”

Sessions wouldn’t go as far ?|

he thinks “she has a good

“I am enthusiastic about this

following an hour-long meeting

After writing a 10-part series
upon returning to the U.S. after

He returned for six weeks and
wrote another 10-part column
that got him banned from

After his first experience in
South Africa, he was sent to

It was like interviewing a

Hoagland said. “He was a man
of extreme violence. You could
tell it from just sitting in his
presence.”
Hoagland left the Middle
East for Paris in 1976. l
“You never leave the Middle
East; it always comes and gets
you. And now of course the big
international story of the day is
Iraq,” Hoagland said.
While in Columbia,
Hoagland said he plans to visit
and work with the journalism
school on several projects such
as the school’s proposed move
