Facebook election campaigns land candidates in trouble Jennie Ulissner (U. PENN) DAILY PENNSYLVANIAN I PHILADELPHIA — Freshman student-government candidates thought that popular networking site facebook.com would be a good campaigning tool. However, some students’ use of it led to the highest number of election-cycle violation charges in the past four years. At the close of voting Thursday, Colleen Donovan, the grievance officer for the Nominations and Elections Committee, brought 18 violations against 14 students for campaigning before Sept. 20, the first day it was permitted. Every violation was, attributed to either a group or a message on the Facebook. NEC Vice Chairman of Elections and college senior Eli Hoffman said Donovan, a college sophomore, “has a reasonable belief that a violation may have occurred and that the decision should be left up to the NEC as a whole,” at a 4 p.m. Sunday hearing in Logan Hall. Candidates and NEC members alerted Donovan to the alleged violations. , - Although the NEC’s Fair Practices Code does not mention the Facebook explicitly, it forbids early campaigning. The code says that “only during (the official campaigning period) may candidates and their surrogates actively promote their candidacies by campaigning. Any act, process, or publication which may solicit votes is considered campaigning.” Given this definition, some candidates feel the NEC is justified in charging them with violations. “It was an innocent error.... If they want to disqualify me, I’d understand. It is said you can’t get your name out there early,” class president candidate and college freshman Steve Martucci said. Martucci was charged with a violation for creating a Facebook group entitled “I am voting for Steve Martucci and Ricky Walters for Freshman Class Boards.” College freshman Dan Tavana, also running for class president, said he felt the NEC was only doing its job by watching the election closely. “But bringing up 18 violations for such a ridiculous thing, it’s out of control,” Tavana said. Tavana was charged with two violations: one for a Facebook group he says was created by his friend called “Dan Tavana for class of 2009 president” and another for a Facebook message posted by a friend. He said his friend created the group without his knowledge. The NEC charged college freshman Wilson Tong with a violation for a supportive message as well. “It’s not actively campaigning. I didn’t tell the person to do it,” Tong said. He said he feels confident he will have a compelling argument to defend himself because, he said, he did not actively campaign before the legal date. Despite the charges, Hoffman said more than 1,600 freshmen voted, amounting to 62 percent of the freshman class — a record number for the last decade. During Sundays hearing, Donovan will present the charges, and candidates will have the chance to defend themselves. Then, the parties involved will answer questions posed by the NEC and the general public. PILATES • COUTinUCD PROID 5 movements haphazardly. Finally, all movements must have fluidity. The human body rarely ever moves in static, independent movements, so Pilates discourages taut motion and embraces smooth, flowing movement. All Pilates movements originate from the body’s center. Because of Pilates’ focus on the core posterior muscles, the method is said to be especially beneficial for alleviating back pain. The method concentrates on the spine and surrounding muscles while teaching participants an awareness of balance. Pilates often appeals to people who want to be healthy without running long miles or lifting weights. Kristen Rizzo, a first-year international business student, does Pilates because “it is a very low-impact activity. I know that I’ve worked my muscles because I always feel sore the next day, but it is easy. I don’t feel completely exhausted after a class.” Pilates can also appeal to those with stressful lives. “It is a relaxation method. It’s really good when I’m stressed out about homework and classes” Rizzo said. With the recent popularity of the fitness method, many trainers are teaching Pilates without certification or formal training. Organizations such as the Pilates Method Alliance worry the physical standards set by Joseph Pilates will recede, making way for improper forms of the activity. The biggest problem with diluting Pilates’ original rules is that improper teaching can lead to injury, or poor results. The Strom Thurmond Wellness & Fitness Center offers group Pilates classes Mondays and Wednesdays 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:15 p.m.-5:15 p.m., and Fridays at 1:05 p.m. Columbia also offers opportunities to participate in Pilates. New Life Fitness World offers Pilates classes at two locations: St. Andrews Road (call 803-732-9000 for more information) and Two Notch Road (803-726-9000). Comments on this story? For MIT’s laptop, flash memory will be used to conserve space and reduce power consumption. The current plans have the memory placed at 1 gigabyte — a perfect amount for saving small documents and homework. Speed is also an issue for many computer users. While many computer manufacturers are praising desktops equipped with 3.5 gigahertz processors, MIT is taking a more modest approach. The current processor is 500 megahertz, which might seem laughable but is a fair amount considering the target audience isn’t going to be playing any graphically intensive games on these machines. Researchers have chosen Linux as the operating system. Linux takes less power and memory to run than the well-known Windows. Linux is also open-source, meaning the software can be modified without violating copyright laws. In theory, the Linux software on this machine can be modified for specific classes, schools and countries. Power is also another issue developers have considered, given mat many children in developing countries do not have access to a steady supply of electricity. The developers might have solved the power problem by designing the laptop to include a hand crank. Cranking the handle for one minute will supply the laptop with 10 minutes of power, hopefully enough time to complete and save that important paper before the power runs out again. Researchers have come up with a solution to this problem: a method they have termed “mesh networking.” The concept behind mesh networking is that a group of people in the same area can work together and share the same Internet connection with each other. The laptop is designed for WiFi and is also cell-phone-enabled, meaning users can get quick access to the Internet with their cell phones if they re not in range of a wireless signal. Developers plan to unveil a prototype of the machine next month at the World Summit on the Information Society conference in Tunis.f Many countries around the world have already shown interest in distributing the machine to their schoolchildren. Among the first countries expected to purchase this machine are China, Brazil, Egypt, South Africa and Thailand. Massachusetts also has plans to offer the laptops to children. Comments on this story?
