Legal thrills, not demonic chills, power ‘Exorcism of Emily Rose

Claiming to be “based on a
true story,” “The Exorcism of
Emily Rose” draws people into
the theater by advertising itself
as a horror film. But in an
interesting twist on the
overused storyline of demonic
possession, the bulk of the
action is set in and around a
courtroom. The focus of the
film is not on the possession
itself but in the telling of the
story and the questions that
arise from the exorcism.
The film starts after Emily’s
death, with the medical
examiner arriving at the Rose
estate, an eerie farm engulfed in
fog and a quaint house filled
with crucifixes. After the
medical examiner determines
Emily did not die from natural
causes, the police arrest the
Rose family’s priest, Father
Moore (Tom Wilkinson), and
charge him with negligent
homicide.
Meanwhile, defense attorney
Erin Bruner (Laura Linney) sits
at a bar being congratulated for
her latest win in court: the
surprising acquittal of a
homicidal maniac who was sure
to get the death penalty. When
Bruner’s boss offers her Father
Moore’s case, she jumps at the
chance to take on the media
spotlight once again, but with
the stipulation that she be
named full partner if she wins.

During the trial, Emily’s
possession is revealed through
flashbacks. One night at 3 a.m.,
Emily wakes to the smell of
something burning. Like every
inquisitive college student, she
goes out into the dimly lit
hallway to find the source.
When Emily gets back in bed,
some unknown force pulls her
sheets off her and a spirit
overtakes her. Her body contorts
as the demon possesses her.
After going to the college
hospital, Emily’s condition
worsens, and she goes home to
be cared for by Father Moore.
As the trial progresses, the
film addresses questions about
Emily’s mental state, whether
demonic possession is real and

M Boutique proves trendiness
does not have to be expensive

A high-price stigma tends to
follow boutiques, but one
Columbia boutique is
marching to a different beat. M
Boutique is proof that trendy
boutique apparel does not
always have a matching
boutique price tag.
Emily Williams, a retail
buyer with 10 years experience,
opened M Boutique in October
2003. M is located at 2820
Devine St.
Williams describes M as “a
women’s contemporary
boutique,” whose target market
is 18- to 35-year-olds.
“We try to have the current
trends at all times, and one of
our focuses is to have the trends
at a good price.”
Price, Williams said, is what
separates M from the
competition.
“We are very price focused.
Our main price point range is
tops under $100 and then our
denim ranges from about $70
to $158.”
In addition to tops and
denim, dresses and jackets are
also affordable at M.
“I would say the most
expensive thing we would have
in the store is a nice cocktail
dress, and that would be about
$200. Even our jackets are
pretty reasonable, between $80
and $150.”
M offers a variety of brands
of denim and apparel. A few
denim brands include Joe’s
Jeans, Red Engine, and Chip &
Pepper. As for clothing, M
carries names such as Wendy
Hill, French Connection,
Parameter and To The Max.
And that’s just a handful.
This season’s hottest fashion
trends have found their way
into M, and people are
definitely taking notice.
Williams said that denim
and going-out tops have been
big sellers this season in
addition to a few other items.
“Jeans are such a hot
commodity. We also sell a lot of
blazers. Shrunken blazers in
corduroy are really big. Blazers
are a good staple for the
Columbia climate because
they’re not very heavy. Gauchps
are also a very popular item
right now.”
As for Williams’ favorite
items, she is partial to denim
brand Joe’s Jeans.
“I swear by Joe’s Jeans.
They’ve been a great denim line
for us in the sense of fit and
how they wash. They last, and
they’re pretty decently priced.”
Williams is also a fan of the
brand White.
“Personally I like it. It’s
different; it’s unique; it’s not
your bread-and-butter label.”
If you are looking for a gift,

and accessories.
Williams said M has some
“very affordable, yet very trendy
handbags.”
“You will also see more belts
and very well-priced earrings.
We also sell a lot of fun, novelty
affordable sweaters close to
holiday.”
If you still cannot decide on
a gift, you definitely will not go
wrong with an M gift card.
As for what is ahead for M,
Williams said, “I really want to
continue to find good, quality
clothing at a very moderate
price. I really want to cater
toward a market where you
don’t have to spend $200 on a
trendy top.
“Were still trying to grab
new clients everyday; that’s the
direction we’re focusing on.”
