A listserv e-mail sent Monday notified students of Wardrip’s death and class cancellations. Wardrip first began teaching at USC in 1986, after teaching at the University of Texas and Texas Tech University. He last taught at USC in fall 2004. One of Wardrip’s most notable contributions to the school is the Maymester trip to New York City he created 10 years ago. Students have met with numerous professionals in the advertising and public relations industries, many of whom are Wardrip’s former students, through the trip. Charles Bierbauer, dean of the College of Mass Communications and Information Studies, called Wardrip’s May class “a unique course that took advertising and public relations students outside the classroom and into the working world. His network of former students who stayed in touch and hosted his current students reflects on his effectiveness and impact as a teacher.” The SJMC has created a scholarship in Wardrip’s name for students in his Maymester program. “In the simplest of terms, I liked the guy and will miss him and his spirit,” Bierbauer said.
