For Tim Burton and Johnny
Depp’s fourth movie together
(their fifth, “Corpse Bride,”
comes out later this year), they
have rightly chosen a richly
quirky tale and one of Roald
Dahl’s most famous books.
“Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory” is a perfect match for
Depp and Burton, Hollywood’s
most eccentric and entertaining
entities. Burton displays his
amazing visual concepts of
Willy Wonka’s wondrous
chocolate factory, while Depp
performs the idiosyncrasies and
physical oddities of the candy
maker himself.
Freddie Highmore, Depp’s
costar in last year’s “Finding
Neverland,” plays Charlie
Bucket, the only child of an

Ever dreamed of writing poetry
comparable to works by Emily
Dickinson, Robert Frost or
Langston Hughes? Your first steps
to poetic genius could be alongside
distinguished poets in the area and
USC faculty.
The South Carolina Poetry
Initiative at USC will hold the
schools first Poetry School 101
Aug. 12-14, at the Columbia
Museum of Art. Poetry Initiative
Assistant Director Charlene
Spearen said this is the first of a
three-part series of poetry schools.
“There will be another in
October and a third in February
2006,” Spearen said.
The workshop will teach the
basics of poetry writing, such as
syntax, content, meter, rhyme and
style voice in free verse. Poetry 101
students will work with USC
faculty and graduate students. The
workshop will also address how a
poetry writer takes risks, deals with
hidden messages and approaches
difficult subjects.

involved when you craft a poem,”
Spearen said.
Participants will write and
present their poetry and receive
additional tutoring from USC
faculty. The Poetry 101 students
will have inspiration from the

Columbia Place Mall, opened in
March and is just one of five
Charlotte Russe stores in South
Carolina.
The Charlotte Russe company
was founded in San Diego, Calif.,
in 1975, and the name “Charlotte
Russe” derives from a crime puff
dessert of the same name.
Stephanie Powers, store
manager of Columbia Place’s
Charlotte Russe, describes the store
as “a very hip place that offers
trendy clothes at affordable prices.”
Powers, who has worked in
retail since 1986, said, “Charlotte
Russes style reflects a very laid
back Californian philosophy.”
Charlotte Russe, whose target
market is primarily 15- to 23-year
