♦ GERVAIS STREET TRAFFIC
BETWEEN SUMTER AND
ASSEMBLY STREETS is still
merged to ‘one lane in each
direction, but don’t let that stop
you. While still irritating, traffic
moves quickly despite brief red
lights for the occasional jaunty
state senator taking in the air. Feel
free to take in artwork displayed
on a chain-link fence across from
the State House, including a
rather disturbing painting of a
young girl decapitating a turkey
(no joke).
♦ GADSDEN STREET BETWEEN
LADY AND GERVAIS STREETS will
be closed this weekend for asphalt
patching. Dinosaurs beware.
♦ The 1200 BLOCK OF MAIN
STREET is closed to car traffic. No
news there. Take a walk and stretch
your legs.
♦ Damn you, Harden Street.
The 900-1100 BLOCK is lane
shift purgatory from sewer line and
electrical duct bank installation.
Avoid Five Points in your car, or
may heaven help you.
♦ BULL STREET next to the
Russell House is closed off for
construction. If you feel so
inclined, get up some speed in your
car before attempting to vault over
the giant hole in the street.
Businesses in the aforementioned
blocks remain open.

Lady and Lincoln streets
Reporting officers responded to
a call of an officer in pursuit of a
suspect on foot. The suspect was
chased to a structure, where he
managed to get on the roof. Police
apprehended the suspect, and he
was placed in custody of the
Columbia Police Department.

Main and Whaley streets
The reporting officer observed a
suspicious vehicle and conducted a
traffic stop for an expired license
plate. The vehicles driver’s-side
back-door window was also broken
out.

Whaley’s Mill, 1311 Whaley St.,
Apt. 205
Reporting officer L. Welch
responded to the subject refusing
to leave the property after being
evicted. Welch arrived to find the
subject packing belongings into a
van and told the subject he wasn’t
allowed on or in USC dormitories.
The subject was instructed to
remove any remaining items only
with approval from Housing.

Heyward and Marion streets
While on a related call at Cliff
Apartments, the reporting officer
saw suspect Morris K. Williams,
whom he knew to have a
suspended drivers license, driving
a vehicle. The vehicle was stopped,
and Williams was arrested and
taken to Richland County
Detention Center.

1112 Greene St.
The reporting officer observed
the subject to be extremely
intoxicated. The subject said he
wanted to go to Richland
Memorial Hospital and was
transported by EMS.
TUESDAY, JULY 5
©DUI, FIRST DEGREE
Barnwell and Greene streets
The reporting officer observed a
vehicle driving at a high speed and
running a stop sign at the
intersection. The officer pulled over
the vehicle and smelled a strong
alcohol odor. Adam Charles Turner
said he had been drinking. The
officer noticed Turner had slurred
speech and responded slowly to
questions. Turner was asked to step
out of the vehicle and passed one of
three portions of the field sobriety
test. Turner was arrested with .14
percent blood-alcohol level.
