Rising junior tailback Cory
Boyd has been suspended from
the USC football team for
unidentified reasons.
Boyd was said to have violated
athletic department policy and was
not dismissed for academic reasons.
In a statement released by the
athletic department, spokeswoman
Michelle Schmidt said “right now
(Boyd) is not a member of the
football team.”
“While Cory Boyd is a student
in good standing with the
university and currently enrolled
in classes, he is not a part of the
football team due to athletic
department policy,” Schmidt said.
USC head coach Steve Spurrier
refused to elaborate on Boyd’s
situation, saying only, “He’s got
a.
some issues he’s working on.”
When asked if Boyd would be
back on the roster for the season,
Spurrier said, “Ask me about

let you know.
That’s when

get his grades up.
But he is eligible,” Spurrier said.
He added that Boyd is still
attending summer school classes
but was not one of the players he
had mentioned earlier as an
academic risk.
The top returning rusher for
last year, Boyd looked to be a key
cog in the Spurrier offense. His
309 yards rushing and 347 yards
receiving made him a multi
purpose threat that many
expected would flourish under the
new system.
This is the second consecutive
summer that Boyd had been
banned from taking part in team
activities. Last summer, Boyd was
one of seven players forced to
workout on their own after lack of
attendance at off-season workouts
and summer school.
The loss of Boyd puts the USC
running game in a tight spot, after
All-SEC running back Demetris
Summers was suspended from the
team after testing positive for
marijuana. Gamecock fullback
Antonio Lamar left USC in May
after becoming academically
ineligible.
Since the end of last season,
twelve USC players have been
arrested, while Summers and Boyd
have been suspended. Two of the
twelve arrested players remain with
the team, bringing the total of
players lost to arrests, suspensions
and academic casualties to 13.

Trustees
OK budget
for increase
in tuition

USC students will be paying
an increased tuition this fall
after the Board of Trustees
approved an $863 million
budget for the 2005-2006 year.
The new budget means in-state
USC Columbia students will
pay an additional $379,
bringing the total bill to $3,457
per semester. Out-of-state
students’ tuition will increase by
$1,016, totaling $ 9,278 each
semester.

When students begin to
repay their college loans, they
may be surprised at the rate
increase, which began July 1.
According to the South
Carolina Department of
Education, The Federal Stafford
Loan interest rate will rise from
3.37 percent to 5.3 percent
during in-school, grace and
deferment periods. Along with
