CONCERT REVIEW
‘No Boundaries'
for music's message
By JAMES PRINCE
THE GAMECOCK
A concert is designed to give
fans the opportunity to feel an
artists energy. Listening to a CD is
one thing, but being in an artist’s
presence and observing how music
moves them — and being able to
move with them —- is another.
Walking through the doors of
the Township Auditorium this past
Friday, fans of Beres Hammond,
Marcia Griffiths and Jimmy Cozier
had the opportunity to feel that
energy before the show even began.

Boundaries” with a picture of
Hammond looking toward the sky
as if he was in a proverbial state of
happiness was the first thing they
saw. And the concert gave him the
chance to spread his happiness.
Although preceded by other
headliners, you could tell this was
Hammonds show, and people
loved him. Drums made the floors
shake, guitars hit your soul with
immeasurable power, saxophone
hit every nerve in your body and
standing in front of their seats,
listening intently with eyes closed.
However, Marcia Griffiths, who
the host called “the Queen of
Reggae,” was the boost to
Hammonds show. At the
mentioning of her name everyone
got excited, and she started by
saying, “We coming to you
through the positive vibes of reggae
music.” Those positive vibes
radiated through the auditorium.
She spoke softly as her set
continued. “There is a natural
mystic in the air ... the message is
in the music. We uplift your spirits
through the music of reggae.
Performing songs such as “Closer,”
as well as her classic single “Electric
Boogie,” she created this feeling,
this mysticism in the air.
Jimmy Cozier, the opening
headliner, also excited the crowd.
His performance, including a song
written by Hammond called “Slow
Down” and another called
“Burning,” proved his skills as an
artist and performer.
The concert was good for the

problems. The
auditorium’s
equipment problems
also took away from
the performances
because they
continually had to
stop in the middle of
songs. In addition, the
local opening act had
admirable vocal skills
but not great stage
presence, which made
the show start on a
bad note.
As the fans left, you
could tell they would
go home and put in a

they could feel the “natural mystic

■ ‘BATMAN’
Continued from page 6
takes on his position of city
vigilante, seeking revenge on all
those who prey upon the
fearful.
Director Christopher Nolan
draws Batman fans back to the
darker side Gotham City’s
underworld. Gone are the
colorful costumes and corny
story lines that have been the
basis of most of the other
Batman movies.
When immersed in this tale,
there are elements that take us
back to the original, darker hit
of 1989. We are introduced to
two villains, the ninja cult
master, Ra’s Al-Ghul, and Dr.
Jonathon Crane — the
Scarecrow as you are more
likely to know him.
And what Batman story
would be complete without the
love interest? This time it is
childhood friend Rachel
Dawes, played by Katie
Holmes, who has captured our
hero’s heart. She might not
return his feelings completely,
but this won’t stop Batman
from saving the day and getting
a little action from the leading
lady.
From “Begin”ning to end,
this thrill-packed movie will
keep you interested. You might
not get introduced to Batman
until about an hour into the
fdm, but it’s finally what
Batman fans wanted to know
— just where did this guy come
from?
With the introduction or the
Joker at the end of the film,
you can’t help but long for
more. Fans are hopeful that
Nolan will direct another
Batman movie, keeping it on
the dark, gritty side and leaving
out the corny one-liners. Bale is
also a hopeful for filling the
pointy-eared hat once again.
So keep your ears tuned in
and your eyes upward. You just
don’t know when you might
catch a glimpse of the caped
crusader himself or his bat
signal.

Another major selling brand is
Hanky Panky. Hanky Panky
underwear come in an array of
colors in both low and high-rise
styles.
Customers are not the only
people with favorite
merchandise. Ray has a few
desirables, too.
1 really like the Mary Green
brand. The line is comparable to
Victorias Secret. The Mary
Green merchandise is hip and
sexy like Victorias Secrets, but it
has a European flair. Mary Green
is known for funky color
combinations and quality
fabrics,” Ray said.
Merchandise at tullulah ranges
from $10 to $210, but Ray said,
“Most of the products average
around $50.”
If you’re looking for some fun
gift ideas for engagements or
weddings, Ray suggests
merchandise from the brand 2
Belles. This brand offers
underwear with messages across
the back, reading phrases such as
LAURA-JOYCE GOUGH/THE GAMECOCK
Patrons can visit tullulah at
2821 Devine St. in Five Points.
“I Do” or “Mrs.” written in
Swarovski crystals. And if you
think the phrases are cute, you
will love the grosgrain ribbons tied
on each side of the underwear.
As for what’s in store for the
future, Ray said, “In the fall,
tullulah will be carrying Tepper
Jackson cotton pajamas in sesy
and cool psychedelic colors, and
during the holidays there will be
a lot of velvet. And I always have
new colors of Hanky Panky
arriving,” Ray said.

tullulah at 765-9982.
