Orientation staff accommodates record turnout
• Largest-ever incoming
freshman class no problem
for USC administration

Parents and incoming freshmen are
crowding Greene Street as USC receives
what is predicted to be its largest incoming
freshman class.
Before July 1, the USC campus will
receive somewhat more than last year’s 3,402
students. Official enrollment figures for the
fall semester have not been released.
Orientation began May 31.
Despite the large numbers, navigating
campus and attending orientation meetings
is not a problem for most new students.
“It’s been fine, just a lot of people,” said
Christian Younginer, an incoming freshman
happy with how the event has been
organized.
“It’s the same as any other class,” said
Emily San Jose, assistant director of
orientation.
“We want to get everyone through. We

want to get them scheduled. We want to
make sure they have all their questions
answered, and it’s just more of them, that’s
all.”
San Jose attributes much of the success to
student orientation leaders, who guide
visitors through the process. Last year almost
200 sophomores, juniors and seniors applied
for orientation leader positions, but only 18
were selected.
“Orientation leaders train hard all
semester long, and they get to the point
where they know what they’re doing,” she
said.
Concerns about growing class sizes and
student-faculty ratios led to the Faculty
Excellence Initiative, introduced by USC
President Andrew Sorensen in 2004. The
initiative provides for the hiring of 150
tenure-track faculty members, along with
100 research faculty members during a five
year period.
Student Lite Director Jerry Brewer said
the jump in enrollment has been accounted
for and the university is working to ensure “a
positive Carolina experience” for current and
future students.
A target of 3,350 freshmen was set for last
year, with plans to increase that number by
50 per year in subsequent years.
