USC inks deal to aid international fuel-cell research programs
By AMANDA ALPERT
THE GAMECOCK
USC signed an agreement with
one of Korea’s most prestigious
research institutions Friday to
advance its fuel-cell research
efforts.
The collaboration was signed by
Ik-Soo Choi, president of the
Korea Institute of Energy Research
and USC President Andrew
Sorensen, and will reportedly give
both institutions an upper hand on
fuel-cell research.
Scientists will work on direct
methanol fuel cells, which can be
used for battery replacements;
portable consumer products,
including cell phones and lap top
computers; and solid oxide fuel
cells, which could be used in
residential power systems, auxiliary
power units for vehicles or large
utility power systems, according to
a USC news release.

partnership is technology,” said
Harris Pastides, vice president for
research and health sciences. “The
institution has the technological
capacity and technical properties
in areas that are complimentary to
ours and we hope to boost
research for graduate and
undergraduate students in the
fuel-cell area.”
Many students consider the
agreement as a positive step for
USC.
“Something like this bestows a
great name for USC,” said Tim
Slice, a second-year biology
student. “When students
graduate and want to go into a
field like engineering, this
collaboration will give employers
a predetermined notion of the
education here.”
Praise also comes from those
who believe the university can
benefit from areas aside from
research opportunities and
international recognition for USC.

strengthen the fuel-cell research

Officials ponder file-sharing
By MARJORIE RIDDLE
THE GAMECOCK
USC is researching file-sharing systems
that would legally allow university users to
share computer files.
While the process is still in the beginning
stages, several systems including iTunes,
Napster, Cdigix and Ruckus, presented
their programs to officials in the spring
2005. After the presentations, students and
USC personnel discussed options.
Among the issues discussed was
implementing stricter punishments for
students caught file-sharing illegally. A
student suggested listing in The
Gamecock the top 10 Internet Protocol
user addresses illegally sharing files each
week in a format similar to that of police
reports.
Associate Vice President for Student
Affairs Gene Luna clarified that this
suggestion was for people the recording
industry notifies Computer Services about,
not people the university itself seeks out.
“In my opinion, that would never
