film, however, has been called unfair
and untrue to Baers real character.
Although there is truth to the overall
story of Baer being a ferocious
fighter, the characterization seems to
be exaggerated to fill the void of the
stereotypical “villain” and
manipulated to add suspense.
All the right cliches are perfectly
in place, and all the emotional
heartstrings are pulled in the
expected places. But Howards
seamless camera work, Goldsman’s
effortless writing and the actors’
believable performances seem to
freshen the cliched “feel-good”
moments and add the right touches
of sentimentalism to the film.
Howard’s directing ability
continues to become stronger
through the years, and “Cinderella
Man” is a perfect example of his
growth in the craft. Howard seems to
move naturally through scenes and
unravels the story with the perfect
balance of emotional moments and
harsh reality, lo transition trom
Braddock’s lifestyle before the
Depression to the family’s poverty
during the Depression, Howard
smoothly slides the camera from the
Braddock’s dresser in 1929, covered
in jewelry and trinkets and a framed
picture of the two on their wedding
day, to the same dresser in 1933
devoid of the jewels and the frame
that once held their wedding picture.
Zellweger once again proves
herself as a chameleon that can easily
change her accent, body and style to
fit the part. Paul Giamatti, an
underrated actor who has been
overlooked the last two years, gives
another starding performance as
Braddock’s feisty, quick-quipping
manager, Joe Gould. And leading
the cast with yet another fascinating
portrayal, Crowe wonderfully plays
Braddock with enough restraint and
strength to give the character depth
and humanity.
Despite minor movie cliches, the
performances and direction of
“Cinderella Man” transform the
film from a mediocre retelling of
the story of a courageous man into
a beautiful tribute to a true
American hero.
