Linebacker charged with DUI, released on $1,000 bail
By ALEX RILEY
SPORTS EDITOR
Sophomore linebacker Dustin
Lindsey was charged with DUI in
Alabama on Saturday. Lindsey, who
is from Mobile, was pulled over for
speeding and found to be
intoxicated, according to police. He
was released Tuesday on $ 1,000 bail.
Lindsey was recognized during
the Garnet and Black Game in
April with the Everyday Effort
Award and was expected to be a
contender for starting linebacker
this fall after four tackles in the
spring game. Lindsey was in eight
games as a freshman, spending
most of his time on special teams.
His twin brother Jordin Lindsey
also plays for the Gamecocks.
Twelve USC football players
have been arrested since the end of
the 2004 season. Six players,
including wide receiver Syvelle
Newton, were charged with
larceny after taking equipment and
pictures from Williams-Brice
Stadium. Players not graduating
have remained on the team. Moe
Thompson and K.T. Mainord were
suspended after breaking into East
Quad apartments and removing
electronics, linens and cash.
USC football coach Steven
Spurrier said after the incident
involving Thompson and Mainord
that he would use suspensions to
deter misbehavior.
“As I’ve said before, we can’t
control everything these players do
all the time,” he said. “However,
we can control who plays and who
puts on a uniform.”
Wide receiver David Smith was
also suspended after breaking into
his girlfriends apartment and trying
to strangle her, while Ty Erving and
Josh Johnson were arrested in April
for marijuana possession.
According to WLTX.com,
Spurrier said Lindsey will not be
suspended from the team.
