Some students ready
for vacation at home

While some USC students are heading to islands
and other tropical destinations, many students are hap
py to be returning to their hometowns, despite cur
fews and occasionally annoying parents and siblings.
“I’m really, really excited about going home. I’m
actually bringing two of my girlfriends home with
me,” said Sarah Workman, a first-year sports and en
tertainment management student. “I’m just really ex
cited because I need to go home, and party, and see
my friends and family. I miss everyone, and I just
can’t wait to go home.”
Workman said that the only anxiety she has about
returning home is the difference between Columbia
and New Orleans, her hometown.
“South Carolina is so different from New Orleans,
but I’m really excited to go home,” she said.
Workman said there were a lot more places to eat
and things to do in New Orleans than at USC.
“I really, really can’t wait,” she said.
Some students are happy to get a break from
classes.
Jennifer Winn, a first-year nursing student, said she
couldn’t wait for “no classes and sleeping as late as I
want,” but not “having my mom on my back telling
me what time to come home.”
Winn said her parents don’t always approve of
her sleeping habits, which can create conflict.
“My dad and my mom like to wake me up. They
come in at 2 o’clock and say, ‘Are you going to sleep
all day?’ and I’m like ‘yeah,’” she said.
Winn and her friends from Rock Hill, her home
town, might take a road trip to Myrtle Beach. If not,
Winn plans to “just chill and party.”
Many students seem to have reached a consensus
regarding friends and partying.
“The thing I’m looking most forward to is seeing
all my friends — they’re all going to be home —
and going out and clubbing and bar hopping,”
Workman said. “That’s going to be a lot of fun, and
chilling with my friends, and showing my friends
from here how we do things in New Orleans.”
Having siblings around again after being away at
school can be challenging for some students.
“My brother will want to go out and party with
me,” Winn said. “He can, occasionally, but I don’t
want him there all the time.”
Workman, who has a younger brother in high
school, said that while she and her brother have their
differences, they have been getting along better since
she moved out.
“We don’t like see each other as much, so we can’t
fight as much, but sometimes when I go home, he’ll,
I don’t know, he’ll do something to get on my nerves,
and we’ll just like lash at each other,” she said. “We
don’t fight as much as we used to when I was younger,
so it has gotten a lot better. But sometimes I’m just
like, ‘Get out of my face.’”
First-year mathematics student Eric King said he
is most looking forward to seeing his mom.
“I’m a momma’s boy, and I’m not scared to admit
it,” he said.
King said he’s excited about returning to Cross Hill,
his hometown, because most of his friends attend Lander
University or Presbyterian College, both of which are
nearby. They will all be home for spring break.
“Since we have a small town, we just, like, go to the
movies,” he said.
King said he might even drive back to Columbia to
visit some of the friends he has made here.
“I’m going to miss all my friends here,” he said. “I
mean it’s just for a week, but still.”
