$700 at an Oct. 29 Headliners
benefit concert, but the rotary clubs
have born the brunt of the costs.
“They’re each trying to raise like
$8,000,” Price said, “but we are still
about somewhere between five and
$50,000 short, so we’re still actively
fund raising.”
Latrease Thompson, USC
Habitat’s beneficiary, paid for her
home in a different way, earning
what she called “sweat equity.”
She worked for 200 hours on
others’ homes before she earned the
opportunity to help build her own.
Thompson said she was
impressed by how hard students
were working on her house.
“They’re excellent,” she said, and
paused.
“Actually, to be honest with
you, I was kind of skeptical. On
every other home built when
there’re young people, it goes along
good, but you got a lot of people
who just don’t wanna do
anything.”

Thompson said she was surprised,
though, at how hard USC volunteers
were working.
“It’s just amazing to me. They’re
actually giving it their all, and they
don’t even know me, you know? It
would be different if they knew me
and there were giving their all. I’d be
like, ‘OK, I understand,’ but coming
out for a complete stranger and
sweatin’ and some bammin’ their
fingers,” she trailed off.
“You know, most people these
days are all about themselves. It
amazes me that they’d come just to
help out someone else.”
Now that it’s her turn to receive a
house, she said she was startled by
how conscious USC workers were of
the job they were doing.
“They’re gettin’ into arguments
tryin’ to see who’s doin’ a better
job than the other, but all of them
are excellent, just trying to do the
best job on my house, and I love
each and every one of them,” she
said.
The USC Habitat for Humanity
can still use volunteers, though, Price
said.
“We’ve got a lot of slots open for
the morning. If people are just
walking by on the street they’re
welcome to stop by and see if we
have something for them to do,” she
said.
Construction will continue
through Thursday, as students and
other volunteers turn piles of raw
materials into a livable residence.
First-year electronic journalism
student Alex Campion helped a team
of eight other students hoist sections
of the rafters up over the walls
Monday.
“I’m from Minnesota, and I did it
up there for a community service
project, Twin Cities Habitat for
Humanity,” she said.
“I came down here and I wanted
to stay involved.”
Campion said she was doing all
she could to squeeze the work in
between classes.
“Whenever I can, I want to come
Qut,” she said. “I started at 11 and
I’m working ‘til 3.
“It’s a beautiful day. We got a lot
of work done.”

“When we notify students that something
has occurred, we are hoping to have someone
come forward and then fine those who are
responsible for what has happened,” Fink said.
“Peers should be holding peers to a higher
standard of behavior.”
First-year exercise science student Derek
Pressley, a Bates West resident, said prevention
could be the solution by installing cameras in
elevators. Most said they feel a fine would be
“unfair” and “unnecessary.”
“The fining thing is the last resort,” Fink
said. “We wait a considerable amount of time,
so people can talk about it, police can talk
about it and we can figure out what has
happened.”
Bates West hall government president Rick
Wetherell, a second-year political science
student, said he sees Hall Director Ted Lewis’
logic in fining residents.
“All students need to be involved in keeping
the residence hall,” Fink said. “Our hope is that
regarding what has happened in Bates West
and elsewhere, people will come forth and thus
get this resolved.”
